For a Homey and Charming Kitchen Vibe, Designers Say to Choose This Aesthetic

This humble design aesthetic has come a long way from just shiplap and barn doors.

By

As the heart of your home, you likely want a kitchen that feels homey, welcoming, and warm. What better design aesthetic to adopt for this space than the farmhouse style? While not everyone wants this more casual look, many homeowners find it very charming and easily adaptable. From modern to European, there are many variations of this aesthetic, and whether you're looking for one of those or a more traditional vibe, there are so many designer-approved farmhouse kitchen ideas to pull inspiration from.

The farmhouse design style has come a long way from what it originally meant, which was literally a house built on a farm. It was practical, meant to make home life easier for farmers who had been out working in the field, and was without all the cosmetic bells and whistles other styles had, such as Victorian or Colonial. However, the aesthetic evolved as the country became more industrialized, keeping much of the same sensible features (like Dutch doors, porches, and large central fireplaces) but adopting more design flourishes along the way. In the kitchen, you can still find many of the same ideas, from Dutch pantry doors to painted shiplap to custom built-ins.

If you think you want to capture this aesthetic in your kitchen, no matter the size, keep reading to find 37 farmhouse kitchen ideas below that'll spark your creativity. You'll see just how versatile this humble style can be.
