Consider your tossing and turning a thing of the past.
Before I became a shopping editor, I used to always wake up in a puddle of my own sweat. I didn’t yet know the importance (and wonder) of a great set of cooling sheets. They’re essential for any hot sleeper, year-round. You don’t have to stick to stuffy microfiber sheets that trap heat and leave you tossing and turning.
So many of our favorite bedding brands produce cooling linens, and as a member of the sleep-obsessed House Beautiful shopping team, I know the best ones on the market. We put these sheets to the test in our homes, and after months of sleeping on them, we have the results. Below, you’ll find the best cooling sheets for every type of sleeper. Additionally, we tapped Kaley Medina, sleep consultant and founder of Live Love Sleep, to share everything you need to know about buying a set to ensure you end up with the perfect one for your sleep situation. Whether you prefer a smooth, lustrous bamboo or a breezy linen weave, you deserve a cool night’s rest. Time to stock up before the heat waves hit.

Our top pick for cooling sheets is our shopping editor's go-to. The sheets live up to their name, providing a breezy, comfortable night's sleep. “For years, Buffy has been my gold standard for cooling sheets,” Associate Shopping Editor Janae McKenzie says. “They’re the reason my A/C bill stays manageable in the summer. I just traded in my faded blue set for a new lilac one, and it’s the best upgrade I’ve given my bed in a while. The cooling lyocell fabric is moisture-wicking, so my body stays cool and regulated throughout the night. Honestly, sometimes my room is too cold with these on, but I know they’ll be my lifesaver when the hottest days arrive. I even grabbed a pair of coordinating lavender-colored shams, so that same smooth lustrous look is maintained.”

The bamboo fibers in Cozey’s cooling sheets wick moisture away from your body to cool you at night. “I was familiar with Cozey’s furniture, but new to testing their bedding,” McKenzie says. “The bamboo sheets sadly only come in white for now, but they still do their job well. They’re a great set of guest room sheets, as they have that silky feeling that’ll make them feel right at home. Plus, the pillowcases are smooth against your cheek, so I’ll honestly leave them on my pillows even as I switch out the sheets.”
Material: Viscose bamboo | Weave: Lightweight | Sizes: Full, Queen, King

Slumber Cloud’s claim to fame is its Outlast bedding, woven from the same textile used for NASA astronaut suits. “They feel like traditional cotton percale, but they are much more advanced in their ability to regulate temperature. I really love them,” tester Rachel Elliot says. They have a thicker feel than bamboo sheets and will cool you down when you’re hot, or warm you up when you’re cold. It’s a set of cooling sheets you could use all winter long. Single-ply construction keeps sheets breathable.

Senior Commerce Editor Marina Liao put two viral linen sheet sets to the test, and Quince’s airy set came out on top. “If you want solid linen sheets and/or a linen duvet cover at a budget-friendly price, the obvious pick is Quince,” Liao says. “There are more color options available, and the linen sheets feel comfortable, which you may not expect given the price alone. Quince's linen sheets do get softer with each wash.”

Bamboo is a naturally cooling material, like linen, but unlike linen, which has a rougher feel, bamboo is a lot more like silk. Just ask contributing writer Kelsey Mulvey, who has these sheets and loves them. "As a self-proclaimed sheets snob, I'm always down to try new bedding brands, but it takes a lot for me to be truly 'wowed.' However, I recently tried these, and I have to say...wow," she admits. "Unless I'm able to set the thermostat to an arctic temperature, I run hot when I sleep, so I'm always looking for bed sheets with cooling properties. Not only is the viscose from bamboo used here moisture-wicking and temperature-regulating, so I'm not waking up in a pool of sweat, but they're also ridiculously silky smooth."

If there's a luxury sheet set whose cooling power justifies the price, it's this editor-approved one from Cozy Earth. Both Associate Shopping Editor Jessica Cherner and Senior Commerce Manager Mackenzie Dunn rave about this brand's bamboo bedding for its ultra-smooth feel. The thinner fabric is also a great choice for couples who sleep at different temperatures. “Temperature-regulating and buttery soft, these sheets work for both my husband (a hot sleeper) and me (a cold one)," Dunn says.

The silky-smooth texture of these sheets evokes sheer joy just by you touching it. Their shine and color look a little out of the ordinary at first—even the flat sheet looks stretchy—but the cooling power is simply unmatched. "From the moment I took these sheets out of their package, they were cool to the touch," McKenzie says. "At first I chalked it up to the night air, but then I put them to the ultimate test by sleeping in them in my pre-war NYC apartment with a strong radiator that makes the room feel like a sauna. They kept me cool throughout the night despite the odds stacked against them."
Material: Bamboo rayon | Weave: Sateen | Sizes: Twin, Twin XL, Full, Queen, King, Cal King, Split King

Associate Editor Lauren Gruber loves the lightly textured look of these flax linen sheets. If you're not one to sacrifice aesthetic for comfort, take heart in the dozens of color options that these airy sheets come in, so they can fit whatever color scheme you've chosen for your home. "As I'm used to sleeping on cotton or bamboo viscose sheets, I was initially skeptical that these linen sheets would feel scratchy," Gruber says. "But after washing, they immediately felt softer to the touch. Although they took some getting used to, I ended up being pleasantly surprised by how breathable and soft these sheets were. They feel like sleeping on a cozy T-shirt and my partner and I both noticed that they were more cooling than our other sheets, which was especially useful during a heat wave in New York City."

How We Selected the Best Cooling Sheets

Our first stop whenever we research the best home products, bedding included, is to see what our team of dedicated home decor fanatics and experts already swears by. We tracked down the bedding that's been keeping our hot sleepers on the HB team nice and cool through the night. We also kept an eye out for the materials and features that indicate a cooling sheet—namely, breathable fabrics like TENCEL and bamboo and moisture-wicking technology.
What to Look for When Buying the Best Cooling Sheets

Material/Weave: This is the main thing you want to pay attention to while shopping. Certain materials and weaves are common choices for cooling sheets because of their lightweight nature and moisture-wicking properties. When shopping for cooling sheets, steer clear of flannel options, as this warm and cozy weave is better suited for holding heat than preventing it.
Bamboo sheets are very popular choices for hot sleepers, as both fabric made from bamboo viscose and bamboo rayon carry buttery softness and moisture-wicking properties. Sheets made from eucalyptus fibers, often labeled "TENCEL" or lyocell, carry very similar properties to bamboo sheets, including antibacterial threads. While not moisture-wicking in the way bamboo and eucalyptus fibers are, another cooling bedding material is linen. The lightweight weave that cotton linen sheets carry is a popular choice for summer days, as it makes for a breezier night's rest. The crisp, cool touch of percale weave has a similar effect.
Thread Count: Contrary to popular belief, a higher thread count isn't necessarily a one-to-one indicator of sheet quality. Rather, it's an indication of warmth. Higher thread count sheets can trap more heat underneath, so lower counts are a good sign of a lightweight weave that will have a more cooling effect. Aim for a thread count of 300 or less, but note that many bedding brands are moving away from listing this metric altogether.
Pocket Size: Cooling sheets are bedding at the end of the day, and something you'll want to check no matter what kind of bedding you purchase is the pocket size of the fitted sheet. This metric tells you how tall of a mattress the sheet can comfortably stretch to hold. Pocket sizes of 16 inches or greater are great for loftier mattresses, and the deeper the pocket, the easier of a time you'll have spreading the fitted sheet across the mattress.
How Do Cooling Bed Sheets Work?

Creating a cool sleeping environment is more than just leaving the fan or the air conditioner on at night. Cooling bed sheets help your body at the point of contact on the bed itself, keeping your body from becoming too hot during sleep. Plus, you can avoid needing to wash your bedsheets as often, since you won't sweat as easily. “Excessive sweating not only disrupts our sleep but can also leave us feeling dehydrated and dizzy the next day,” Medina notes. Two main properties will make a sheet have that cooling effect, according to Medina. "The first is moisture-wicking properties, and the second is the material,” Medina notes. “While most cooling sheets are breathable, individuals who sweat during sleep should prioritize bedding that not only facilitates airflow but also draws away and absorbs excess moisture from the body.”
