The iconic lighting has appeared in every cool person's home for the last year, adding a warm glow for everyone who hates the “big light.” But it just got a major smart-home upgrade and re-design you have to see to believe. And no, this is not an April Fool’s joke.

Instead of the cold, clinical light that many harsh LED lights provide, a shiny orange glass dome radiated warm light throughout the home. Now, the new and improved VARMBLIXT lamp is dimmable, and rather than a glossy orange shade, the new dome has a matte, frosted finish. Even better: you can switch between a dozen colors using an included remote control, so you’re not stuck with a bright orange. I got to take the lamp for a test drive before launch, and I fell in love with it instantly. It’s rare that I willingly want to keep something white on display, too.
By simply single- or double-tapping the included remote, you can spin through the color wheel to select the light of your choosing. There are plenty of different color temperatures on the white spectrum, too, from bright daylight to soft candlelight.
The remote can also be mounted to function like a light switch, so I might mount my donut lamp in the near future. If you prefer using your phone as a remote, though, it’s compatible with IKEA’s smart home system, as well as systems from Amazon, Apple, Google, and Samsung.
Like the original, the new donut lamp can still be mounted on the wall or placed upon a table. I opted to let it shine on my dresser for a warm, colored glow in the evenings. I love having the flexibility. I can drench my space in color, or simply have it add a soft background light.
The new donut lamp slowly shifts between colors—unlike other remote-controlled lamps in my home—so it’s not jarring. And I can dim it if the light ever feels like a strain on my eyes. That kind of adaptability makes my home feel kind to my brain, minimizing stress and anxiety. It’s honestly the coolest lamp I own now, and I have a feeling it’ll sell out quickly. I’d hurry to get one of your own.
