- Acrylic storage containers have become popular organizing solutions for the home.
- Jonathan Scott, one half of HGTV’s Property Brothers, recently shared that he thinks these translucent bins actually look “cheap” because they show their cluttered contents.
- Instead of opting for see-through options, the brothers suggest reaching for opaque, woven storage baskets that look stylish and hide what’s inside.
When some think of acrylic, images of aircraft windows and submarine periscopes may come to mind. But for design enthusiasts, the lightweight, translucent plastic is synonymous with a range of homewares, such as coffee tables, faux-wool, and Jonathan Scott’s least favorite iteration: storage bins.
Acrylic organizers have become a staple in many homes, providing an at-a-glance solution for crowded closets and endless tchotchkes that threaten to overrun our spaces. But in a recent video discussing organizational tips, the Property Brothers star took a moment to make his feelings about acrylic storage bins known:“I do not like using acrylic containers as decor,” Jonathan says. “It just looks cheap.”
While one Property Brother is not a fan, the other isn’t fully opposed. Drew listed one exception to his no acrylic rule. “Put them inside a cabinet for kids’ stuff, and it can be really great because you can see what you need,” Drew adds. But neither brother wants those bins out where anyone can see them.
The HGTV stars firmly believe that while you’re buying bins in the hopes of achieving better organization, they’re actually making your home look messier. Instead, they suggest replacing wire and see-through bins left out where you and your guests can see them with opaque baskets. These containers do a better job at hiding knickknacks, resulting in a more curated, organized, and clean-looking space—no matter how many things you attempt to cram inside.
