As a design editor, I've learned that the best Airbnbs aren't always the most expensive—they're the ones that feel thoughtfully designed and genuinely well-maintained. Before I book, I scour the photos for a handful of details that prove to me that the owner cares about comfort, cleanliness, and quality.

These are the five Airbnb features that have become completely non-negotiable whenever I'm choosing a place to stay.

High-Quality Flooring

As much as I appreciate a cozy space, worn carpeting is one of my biggest Airbnb deal-breakers. Hard-surface flooring like hardwood, tile, or quality luxury vinyl immediately makes a home feel cleaner, brighter, and easier to maintain. Unlike older carpet, which can trap dust, pet hair, and lingering odors over time, hard floors are easier to keep fresh between guests.

Flooring is also a sign that the host has invested in durable, long-lasting materials rather than opting for the quickest or cheapest update. Bonus: they photograph beautifully, making the entire space feel more elevated before I even unpack.

A Spa-Like Bathroom

I've officially outgrown tiny corner showers where my elbows hit the walls every time I shampoo my hair. A spacious, thoughtfully designed bathroom has become completely non-negotiable.

I look for a walk-in shower, quality fixtures, plenty of counter space, and enough room to actually move around without feeling cramped. It doesn't have to be luxurious or oversized—it just has to feel intentional.

A well-designed bathroom tells me the host thought about comfort, not just aesthetics, and it's one of the first places I notice whether a property feels well maintained.

Warm, Layered Lighting

Nothing kills the mood of an otherwise beautiful Airbnb faster than one harsh overhead light in every room. Great lighting is one of the easiest ways to make a home feel welcoming, and it's something I always notice as a design editor.

I look for a mix of table lamps, floor lamps, sconces, or dimmable lighting that creates different layers throughout the space. Warm-toned bulbs instantly make a room feel cozier and more inviting, especially after a long travel day. Good lighting isn't just about aesthetics—it changes how comfortable, functional, and relaxing a home feels from morning to night.

Well-Maintained Outdoor Furniture

If an Airbnb advertises a patio, balcony, or backyard, I want it to be a space I'd actually use. Too often, outdoor areas are an afterthought filled with faded plastic chairs or weathered furniture that's seen better days.

Thoughtfully chosen outdoor seating, clean cushions, a dining table, or even a couple of comfortable lounge chairs instantly extend the living space and encourage you to spend more time outside. Whether I'm sipping my morning coffee or winding down in the evening, a well-maintained outdoor area feels like a true bonus—and a sign the host pays attention to the entire property.

Nonporous Kitchen Surfaces

I don't expect every Airbnb kitchen to look like it belongs in a luxury magazine, but I do appreciate countertops made from durable, nonporous materials like quartz, granite, or solid surface.

These materials are easier to clean, resist staining, and generally hold up better after years of guests cooking, eating, and entertaining. More importantly, they signal that the kitchen was designed with longevity in mind rather than just appearance.

Since I almost always cook at least one meal while traveling, I want a work space that feels clean, functional, and well cared for. It's one of those subtle details that elevates the entire stay.
