Designer Christopher Maya curated the best of the globe in a historic estate in Locust Valley, New York.
In the foyer of a 1930s Georgian-style house in Locust Valley, New York, designer Christopher Maya accentuated a dramatic staircase by adding wainscoting along the curved stair wall and covering the entire hall in Temple Newsam, a scenic wallpaper by de Gournay. The frothy Louis XVI demilune and Italian neoclassical gilt barometer are from David Duncan Antiques. Circa-1800 English chandelier, Yew Tree House Antiques. Limestone flooring, Paris Ceramics.
Maya simply cleaned and waxed the original Georgian mantelpiece, which serves as the living room's focal point. Custom sofas covered in Holland & Sherry's Rive Gauche harmonize with yellow-glazed walls. Curtains in Claremont's Small Stripe with tassel fringe by Passementerie.
A custom Chippendale console holds an 1890s carved-wood Guanyin figure and urn-shaped lamps, all from Sutter Antiques. The 18th-century Chinese Coromandel screens came from Gracie.
The graciously-appointed gallery accommodates overflow seating during large parties. Wooden door casings offer a modern contrast to swagged and fringed valances in a Holland & Sherry wool flannel, the same fabric used to cover the custom slipper chairs. In the breakfast room, Maya cultivated a lighthearted mood with an oval table of his own design and Hepplewhite side chairs from J&M Antiques that he stripped and bleached to give them a relaxed look. East meets West on the spacious second-floor landing, furnished with a custom Georgian-style sofa in a Holland & Sherry fabric, a Louis XVI fauteuil upholstered in a silk ikat by Bermingham & Co., and the same chinoiserie wallpaper by de Gournay used in the downstairs entrance hall.
