You'll find blooms everywhere you look.
With vivid color, botanical patterns and a flood of natural light, Celerie Kemble and Lindsey Herod give a Houston house the gift of eternal spring.
Texas flora and fauna adorn the hand-painted Fromental silk wallcovering in the living room of a Houston home decorated by Celerie Kemble and Lindsey Herod. The room's textiles, from the armchairs' Brunschwig & Fils upholstery to the Lee Jofa stripe on the pillows and curtains, play off the palette of the botanical pattern. The 1950s coffee table is Italian, and the bird side table is by Kemble for Maitland-Smith.
"We kept everything and found a way to make it fit," Kemble says of her clients' collection of antiques. The walls are upholstered in a linen from Gray Line Linen, the curtains are in a Schumacher silk and the ceiling is painted Perfect Greige by Sherwin-Williams. Kemble, who found the portrait hanging over the fireplace at an auction, says of its subject: "She looks like a cool woman. I'd like to read her journal."
De Gournay's Deco Monkeys wallpaper animates the powder room; the brass sink and fittings are by Waterworks, and the Yves sconce is by Porta Romana.
With bright green lacquered walls — matched to a Pantone chip by Fine Paints of Europe — and a custom Langham & Fine rug patterned like formal garden hedges, the family room takes on the freshness of an outdoor space. Back-to-back sofas in an ivory Cowtan & Tout fabric create two zones within the expansive room. The custom ottoman is in a Highland Court fabric. A pair of turquoise lamps from 1stdibs were fitted with custom shades. A Hunt Slonem painting hangs over the 17th-century mantel from Chateau Domingue.
A 1958 painting by Swedish artist Ann-Marie Ekbom adorns the bookcase.
Kemble's Glimmer fabric for Schumacher covers a tufted corner bench designed to tuck neatly under the back stairwell, which is papered in Sanderson's Summer Tree. "People just plop there and talk on the phone," Herod says. The white pillow is in a Perennials fabric, and the patterned ones are in Suzanne Tucker Home's Jakarta.
The headboard and bed skirt in the master bedroom are in Lee Jofa's Chinese Lantern print; its palette inspired the room's colors. The bed's dramatic canopy has an exterior in a Schumacher wool satin and an interior in a glazed linen from Rogers & Goffigon (the color of the latter prompted the designers to dub the bed "the cantaloupe"). The room's walls are upholstered in a woven linen from Highland Court, and the nightstands are from Kemble's collection for Henredon.
Mirrors, marble and sunlight bring sparkle to the newly expanded master bath. The garden theme is echoed in Nina Campbell's Orchard Blossom wallpaper and Canopy Designs' custom-colored porcelain branch chandelier. The ottoman is covered in a white terry cloth from Holland & Sherry, and the Calacatta Gold marble tile is from Walker Zanger.
In the guest bedroom, the headboard is cleverly designed to fit around a low circular window that is topped with an upholstered "hat." The canopy fabric is by Rogers & Goffigon, the bedding is by Schweitzer Linen, and the wallpaper is by Cole & Son.
A terrace equipped with an outdoor kitchen is furnished with Graves chairs by McKinnon and Harris and two square tables that can be pushed together to accommodate larger gatherings.
