Designer Andrew Howard remodeled this Florida home for a family of five who wanted the fun, midcentury elements of the house's exterior to be reflected in the interior design.
"This wallpaper was installed by the home's previous owners, but we all loved it so much, we decided not to change it," Howard says. "We just added the hooks for storage and a simple bench where the kids could put their shoes on."

The living room was designed as a space where the clients, who have three young children, could get away. "The custom made sofa is extra deep, so it's extremely comfortable," Howard says. "And it pairs so nicely with the more modern sling chairs."

This room originally had large windows on three walls, which made the furniture fit awkwardly in the space. Howard filled in several of the windows, so the sofa could be grounded against a solid wall. "It ended up making the space feel more open that it did before," Howard says. "We added the two sofas so the family could curl up and hang out together."

"The kitchen started out as a basic white kitchen. We wanted it to feel more in line with the harder lines of the house and we designed it out of quarter sawn oak, which is very durable, and quartz countertops. Also, natural wood cabinets are more likely to avoid the stains that com e from having small kids running around," Howard says.

"The dining room is between the kitchen and the family room, so the dining room needed to have plenty of clearance and you have to be able to get around the table easily. That's why we chose the oval shape — it doesn't have hard edges that you would bump into as you come and go," Howard says.

"For the master bedroom, we wanted to continue the clean lines and mid-century feel of the rest of the house," Howard says.

"This was originally designed to be a playroom, but the boys loved it so much it became their bedroom," Howard says. "The blue paint on the bunks helps mitigate the lack of natural light in the room. The kids treat the busy wallpaper like a sort of 'Where's Waldo?' game."

"I always make sure there's plenty of seating on a patio because, in Florida, the weather is great year round and everyone wants to be outside," Howard says.
