There are many iconic patterns in the interior design world, but I’d argue none is more impactful than the stripe. As House Beautiful’s market editor, it’s my job to scout out and curate the latest in home design products, and stripes are always in. The pattern may have been included in this year’s Vogue Annual Interior Design Trend Report, but I would argue that stripes are not a trend but an evergreen design staple.
With a 700-year-old pedigree, it’s impossible to argue against the staying power of stripes. Sure, we’re seeing the rise in a more fun, maximalist approach to design—that’s partly why we’re seeing so many stripes. But stripes aren’t just for maximalists: The ever-popular print is one of the most versatile around, defying age, gender, and design styles. I’m seeing designers incorporate stripes not just through high-impact choices, such as for wallcoverings and upholstery fabrics, but also through subtler additions like lighting and tableware.
