People say home is where the heart is—but finding a place that checks all the boxes and fits comfortably within your budget is what really matters. Fortunately, Drew and Jonathan Scott are here to help. HGTV has just debuted Property Brothers: Under Pressure, where the duo guides prospective homeowners through the confusing, competitive, and often costly buying process.

For the brothers, Under Pressure arrives at a critical moment. “There's a housing crisis,” explains Drew. “People can't afford to live where they work or have the typical style or the function that they typically want. We have to get very creative to find ways to stretch the budget to help them.”

Throughout the 14-episode season, Drew and Jonathan take on a range of unique situations. Some buyers have rented out extra space, others have purchased property with a sibling, and one family has even renovated an inherited home. While the new HGTV series highlights creative, cost-conscious solutions, every buyer still has their non-negotiables—the must-haves that make a home worth considering in the first place.

Jonathan’s non-negotiable is parking; while this is important pretty much anywhere, it’s practically mandatory in a city like Los Angeles. In fact, he notes that partner Zooey Deschanel once lived in a neighborhood where parking was “treacherous.” “In a lot of places, there’s one lane,” he shares. “There's no parking, and a lot of the houses don't have their own garage. I would lose my mind if I did not have the consistency of a place to park.”

Drew, meanwhile, focuses his non-negotiable needs more on the interior. While many people prioritize an open-concept layout or a gourmet-status kitchen, Drew emphasizes the importance of personal spaces like the bedroom and bathroom. “Spend some time there because that's your happy place,” Drew says. “You wake up every morning, you go at the end of the night. You want to have a smile on your face when you do that.”

As for features that aren’t quite your style—but also aren’t dealbreakers—the brothers encourage a hands-on approach. “If you are trying to set yourself up to be financially successful, put in the work,” Jonathan says. “Nothing great ever came to anyone who took the easy road.”

To get your money’s worth out of your renovation, he suggests prioritizing areas that have the most daily “friction.” “What's adding an extra 20 minutes to your day every single day?” Jonathan asks. “What would make life easier if your home did this? For some, it’s better laundry facilities or a kitchen. For others, it’s a home gym.”
