  • In a recently shared Instagram reel, interior designer Nate Berkus revealed that the best starting point for any home design project is in your closet.
  • Using the collection curated in your personal style, the designer often draws inspiration from client loved pieces.
  • Design trends are also shifting to reflect the impact of personal preferences on home decor choices.

At House Beautiful, we know that your personal style shapes the way you decorate your home, and apparently, Nate Berkus couldn’t agree more. The interior designer took to Instagram to share insights on how he and his team approach their design process, revealing the surprisingly impactful place at home that serves as a key source of inspiration for designers.

“One of the very first things that I’ll ask a client, ‘Can I have a tour of your closet?’” Berkus says in his post.

Don’t worry, he’s not the fashion police—the reason why Berkus likes to take a peek into his clients’ closets is so he can get a read on what their favorite prints, hues, and fabrics are. This gives him a general idea of what someone aesthetically gravitates toward before he begins styling their space.

“All of that information, the team and I will take to craft a fabric story and a color palette that really reflects the people that live there,” Berkus says.

He goes on to say that there really is no better starting point than among the collections you’ve already curated, and we must concur. The home decor scene is moving further away from contrived styles and more toward the eclectic, even whimsical. The shift has resulted in unique color pairings and bolder statement pieces, and we’re here for all of it.

So, next time you're looking to refresh your space, maybe ditch your social feeds and swipe through your racks instead. After all, no one knows your personal style better than you do.
