Experiencing a home break-in is a traumatic event, no matter who you are. Such was the case for Tarek and Heather Rae El Moussa. On Friday, June 12, Heather took to Instagram to share that their home was burglarized while they were reportedly on a family vacation in Los Cabos, Mexico.
“Our home has always been our sanctuary, the place where Tarek and I raise and protect our babies, love our family, and find peace,” Heather wrote in an Instagram post. “Having that space violated has been deeply upsetting, but we are profoundly grateful that our family is safe.”
Nobody was harmed during the incident, but Heather confirms “irreplaceable heirlooms” and “special memories” were taken from the couple’s Newport Beach, California, home. While it’s unclear exactly what was stolen from the HGTV couple’s home, the police reportedly told People the theft included jewelry.
So, what exactly happened? According to People, the perpetrators accessed the home through the backyard between the morning of June 6, 2026, and the evening of June 8, 2026. From there, they apparently shattered a glass sliding door to gain access inside. It’s unclear if the thieves knew Tarek and Heather were out of town.
Amid the drama, the couple is taking their personal safety very seriously. “We’re taking every precaution to protect our home moving forward, and we are grateful to law enforcement for their swift response and diligent work.” Though Heather turned off this post’s comment section, we think everyone can agree this is an incredibly devastating (and scary!) thing to come home to after a relaxing vacation.
While there are some things you can do to protect your home while you’re away—install a home security system and save the vacation social media posts until you’re home, for starters—the truth is that it can happen to anyone. Through it all, the El Moussa family remains thankful for everyone’s support. “Your kindness means more than we can say as we work to restore peace to our home.”
