5 min readA new series from Prime Video is taking us back to the dawn of the digital age, the height of the pop-princess era, and the origins of one of the ’90s and early 2000s’ most beloved heroines: Elle Woods.
Elle, the prequel series to the 2001 hit movie Legally Blonde, is set in the Seattle suburbs and follows Elle through high school. With the titular character played by Lexi Minetree, the series explores the experiences that shape her into the bubbly, ambitious, fashion-loving icon audiences know and love.
Premiering July 1, the eight-episode Prime Video series—already renewed for a second season—is poised to become a long-weekend binge. But recreating Elle's world goes far beyond finding the perfect shade of blonde. The original film's Y2K charm lives on in every detail, from her orange Apple iBook G3 and fuzzy pink VTech cordless phone to her monochromatic pink bedroom and her dog Bruiser's rhinestone-studded collars.
For production designer Laurin Kelsey, however, Elle is more than an all-pink aesthetic. Working from the foundation established by the show’s previous production designer Rachel O'Toole, Kelsey spent six months crafting a home that captures Elle's charisma and unapologetic femininity while imagining how those qualities first took shape in California before her move to Seattle.
“In a prequel, we have the opportunity to rewind the clock and create the backstory of who makes someone who they are, and with such a great character. Elle's so brave and she's so relentlessly optimistic; it just doesn't ever occur to her that she can't do something, which I love,” Kelsey says. “So, to look back at what her childhood, teen years, and developmental time could be like, I think it is really fun. There are a lot of little pieces where I pulled on, like, what did I have in my bedroom? What was I into? I always wanted that clear phone. I didn't have the clear phone, so I thought ‘let's bring that in here!’”

Elle’s Sweet Sixteen Pool Party
Audiences first meet Elle on the eve of her 16th birthday at a posh poolside celebration. The milestone unfolds amid lush floral arrangements in varying shades of blush and fuchsia, with cascading blooms spilling from goblet vases atop Greek-inspired pedestal stands. Sequined mauve table linens woven with baroque floral motifs dress each table, while hot pink script lettering spelling out Elle's name and cherry blossom-striped pool floats provide vibrant pops of color against the sparkling blue water.
On the gray-tiled pool deck, coordinating striped lounge furniture, cushioned chaise lounges, and a scalloped-edge parasol complete the glamorous setting. Beyond the pool, an Art Nouveau–inspired pool house serves as the backdrop, its ornate mantel visible through the open entrance, which is framed by lush pink floral and balloon installations topped with shimmering gold mylar "16" balloons.
Elle’s Family Home
The series also spends far more time inside the Woods family home, where the palette offers a striking contrast to Elle's signature pink. The home's interiors also showcase the rustic architectural details characteristic of Pacific Northwest Tudor homes.
“Part of the storyline is that they're all a fish out of water with the whole family moving to this new home in Seattle. Something we don't get to know in the [original] movie is her parents and the family dynamic they have. So in the home we get a chance to see Eva, Elle's mom, the homemaker,” Kelsey says.
The living room pairs sage, navy, and lilac hues with an exposed brick fireplace and a minimalist metal-framed coffee table.
In the kitchen, a bold cobalt island anchors the space, while a matching blue backsplash adorned with oversized floral medallions adds graphic impact. Plush studded bar stools, speckled granite countertops, honey-toned cabinetry, and coordinating wood floors bring warmth to the room, while white lattice windows and glass-paneled cabinet doors lighten the overall design.
Elle’s Pink Bedroom
Elle's personal spaces were designed with her iconic wardrobe in mind. Because Lexi Minetree's version of the character is so often dressed in raspberry pink, Kelsey built the sets around that defining hue, allowing the character's bright, unwavering optimism to shine through visually.
“In the original film, what the original designer Missy did was she brought in green as the sort of complementary color to pink,” Kelsey explains. “We picked a palette of about six pinks that we tried to continuously keep as her main base palette, and we steered away from green, feeling that gray and lilac would be a nicer contrast for our world, for our story and the other elements.”
That updated approach is most apparent in Elle's bedroom. Rather than recreating the original film's monochromatic pink retreat, the prequel embraces a layered palette of pinks and lilacs. Exposed ceiling beams and faceted wainscoting lend architectural interest to the geometric space, while a hot pink button-tufted headboard replaces the iconic heart-shaped bed from the original film. The tufted detailing continues on a petal-pink bench at the foot of the bed, which rests atop an oversized circular shag rug in bubblegum pink—a fittingly '90s touch, indeed!
A heart-shaped throw pillow pays homage to the beloved original set, while period details including a lava lamp, Walkman, and stacks of CDs complete the room. Mariah Carey's Emotions, Sarah McLachlan's Fumbling Toward Ecstasy, and The Best From Broadway Musicals: Volume 1 all make appearances, with the latter serving as a subtle nod to Legally Blonde's later life on the Broadway stage.
In Elle's ensuite bathroom, black-and-white Victorian dot tile flooring grounds the otherwise rosy space in classic contrast. Soft pink daisy-print wallpaper, candy-colored cabinetry, and a magenta Conair hair dryer atop the single-sink vanity reinforce the character's signature palette, while gold accents—from the faucets and picture frames to the clawfoot tub's gleaming feet—add warmth and sophistication. Overhead, a gold chandelier fitted with powder pink shades blooms like a bouquet, bringing the whimsical room together.
“What I love about Elle is that she doesn't fit just one aesthetic because she's so ever-changing and evolving. She's got this slight classic look, but she's just always moving forward with her style,” Kelsey says.
That tastemaking sensibility has always defined Elle’s character. For instance, long before midcentury modern became a mainstream obsession, the original Legally Blonde showcased a bubblegum-pink Knoll Womb Chair in her bedroom—a subtle but memorable nod to her eye for design.
“I loved that beautiful Womb Chair in the film. It’s very ahead of its time. She was already looking at midcentury modern. She's 16 when she moves to Seattle, so maybe this is where she starts to embrace a little bit more of that forward-thinking individuality,” Kelsey says.
And, of course, we could never forget about Bruiser! Her beloved Chihuahua enjoys appropriately upscale accommodations, with a pastel scalloped tray for his food and water bowls, a queen-size bed of his own, miniature stairs for easy access to cuddles, and even a tiny embroidered sleep mask.
