If you look past the evil occupants and lack of care, these places qualify as dream homes!
Many scary movies take place in hauntingly exquisite locations: a dilapidated manor with an overgrown lawn, a funky house with unusual features, or a pristine estate with malevolent inhabitants. Now that we’re in the throes of horror film season leading up to Halloween, we’re taking a look at all of the tales that unfold in places that actually look lovely to live—so long as they're free of evil spirits.
From the foreboding structure in Crimson Peak to the impressive properties in the 1940 and 2020 versions of Rebecca, behold our definitive ranking of enchanting scary movie houses below. Beware: Each is distinct and has dream home potential if you're willing to look past its occupants and (fixable!) visual faults.

So perhaps this one’s a cheat: The Awakening takes place at a boys' boarding school, but since the building is a residence for many, we’re counting it. Surrounded by vast greenery and water, we’d happily stay on this immense, gated property. The entry halls are especially pleasant, thanks to spectacular moldings dotted with artwork and a staircase with iron rails. The rooms feature big windows, high ceilings, massive fireplaces, wood paneling, lovely wallpaper, and more—all things we wouldn't mind enjoying!

The funky house in the comedy-horror Beetlejuice is a bit reminiscent of New England's steepled white churches. While the massive home’s shape proves to be perplexing and attention-grabbing, its wraparound porch and deck boost the property’s curb appeal. Inside, we see two versions of the house: one by the Maitlands and the other redecorated by the Deetzes. The first is outfitted with traditional wallpaper and wood paneling. Then the Deetzes give it a more modern, artsy makeover with an impactful dining room, cobalt blue kitchen, and glass fireplace mantel in the living room. While it might not be move-in ready, it is certainly one of a kind.

House on Haunted Hill doesn’t play into the usual Gothic or Victorian style structure for its haunted setting. Instead, it takes place at a house made of more than 27,000 blocks placed on top of a concrete platform. In reality, that textile brick house known as Ennis House was built by Frank Lloyd Wright in Los Angeles’s Loz Feliz neighborhood in 1924. While the Victorian-inspired interiors, which were built as entirely separate sets, don’t match the exterior style, we’re not opposed to the mismatched aesthetic. It’s the perfect house for anyone who doesn't want to commit to just one look.

With a front porch, upper-level terrace, and plentiful windows, the neighbor’s house in this horror-comedy has excellent bones inside and out. Albeit cobweb-covered, the interiors are far from builder-grade; in the entry alone, there’s eye-catching dark wood detailing and a circular stained glass window at the top of the staircase. Dramatic candelabra sconces, emerald green drapery, and tall statues give the charming foundation flair.

In the 1940 version of Rebecca, the exterior of the vast, Gothic building has the proportions of a castle with tavern-like interiors. Inside, there’s a grand hall with a fireplace opening taller than the people in it. High archways, big windows, and spacious rooms boost its grandeur. Fine details throughout, like gilded framed artwork, lush drapery, a fur rug, and extravagant floral arrangements, serve up serious interior inspiration.

While it may be covered in dust and spiderwebs, the family home in the iconic 1991 film The Addams Family is quite a catch, thanks to long halls, a grand split staircase, and a spacious balcony. In the main bedroom, dark purple walls and dramatic moldings create a moody atmosphere for a good night’s sleep (not that Gomez lets Mortitia get a wink). Just imagine how welcoming the generous grounds would look after a big investment in thoughtful landscaping.

Set in suburban Colorado, Heretic largely unfolds at Mr. Reed’s (Hugh Grant) house. At first glance, the quaint exterior with lush landscaping and a lovely arched doorway feels like it could easily exist in an enchanted forest. Despite the home’s tiny windows, its compact living room and library provide ample coziness thanks to details like floral wallpaper and shelving brimming with books. The horrific basement, however, would need to be filled in with something like dirt, sealed off, and completely forgotten!

Count Orlok’s castle is exceedingly impressive in size, thanks to its exterior, portrayed by the real-life Hunedoara Castle in Romania. Inside, it’s as spacious as it looks from afar. Take the high-ceilinged dining room, for instance; the oversized space boasts a large fireplace and minimal (but presumably antique) furniture and decor, including a central table, wall tapestry, and fancy silver drinkware. With winding staircases and interior columns, the castle feels grand yet familiar... like the animated one in Shrek.

The Haunting's Hill House boasts a fairytale castle exterior that belongs to its real-life counterpart, the Ettington Park Hotel. (The Gothic Revival mansion is actually available for fans to book a stay.) But if that stately sight isn’t enough, all you need is a glimpse at the fictional interiors to know the property would be a remarkable place to reside. The large library, with a spiral staircase, is a cozy setting to enjoy free time, while the bedrooms are enviable retreats outfitted with lavish fabrics.

While the fictional Gracey Manor in the 2023 movie Haunted Mansion deserves an honorable mention, it can’t quite compare to the one in the original 2003 version starring Eddie Murphy. The foyer’s double staircase, prominent old clock, statues, and massive candelabras set the tone for the harrowing house. While dark, the wood paneling and flooring nod to the home’s history. Of course, it also has a conservatory and is situated near a body of water with the potential to become idyllic with the right care.

The horror-meets-murder-mystery A Haunting in Venice takes place at a spooky palazzo. The chillingly beautiful setting has a dark, scary basement and a dangerous—if not romantic—rooftop garden. Each room of the palazzo boasts a distinct look that creates “a labyrinthine world of confusion,” as noted by production designer John Paul Kelly. Perhaps the most intriguing room, apart from the library with stacks on stacks of books and papers, is the daughter’s bedroom. The mural on the wall and ceiling evokes an enchanted forest, giving the space an ethereal feel. It also has a fireplace, a skirted vanity, and a cozy alcove-style bed, which was designed to feel protective but also imprisoning.

Technically, the Overlook Hotel in The Shining isn’t a house, but the Colorado property does become the temporary winter residence of Jack Torrance (Jack Nicholson), his wife Wendy (Shelley Duvall), and their son Danny (Danny Lloyd). Strictly speaking, the hotel is a lovely destination, and the main common area may be the best interior. Under the chalet-inspired chandeliers, the piano is positioned near the fireplace, and there’s plenty of seating—all crucial ingredients for an ultra cozy interior despite the cavernous proportions. The gold room’s shining tiles and red chairs give the hotel a sliver of groovy '70s elegance, and the carpets are masterful examples of David Hicks-style graphic patterns. Finally, there’s the outdoor hedge maze, which is a murderous feature in the movie, but could be transformed into a stunning refuge.

A 1925 Dutch Colonial known as the Amityville Horror House, one of the most notorious residences on New York’s Long Island, inspired the 1979 horror classic The Amityville Horror. The movie, an adaptation of a 1977 book of the same name, tells the “true” story of George and Kathy Lutz, young newlyweds who fled the home just 28 days after moving in, claiming “a very strong force” drove them from the house. The movie strays from the real history of the house (which you can read all about here), but the movie set itself is pretty similar to the original—especially the two quarter-circle windows that look like eyes. Apart from unique architectural details, the fictional version of the home is situated on the water, is quite spacious, and boasts lovely interiors with sparkling chandeliers and charming wallpaper. It’s a dreamy setup anyone would be lucky to call home.

Despite its unkempt yard and vine-swallowed facade, the Eel Marsh House in The Woman in Black (which is portrayed by the real-life Cotterstock Hall in England’s Northamptonshire) has the potential to be the most delightful English country retreat. The house boasts stained glass windows, different wallpaper, and antique furnishings. And, as with any good haunted home, it has a dramatic staircase off the entrance that is lined with gold-framed portraits.

In author Daphne du Maurier’s novel Rebecca, the English manor house known as Manderley is an alluring central character. While director Alfred Hitchcock’s 1940 adaptation of the novel gets that right, we can’t help but obsess over the 2020 film version of the estate. Black-and-white checkered floors, Persian rugs, wood-paneled walls, and gilded antique frames and furniture are only a smattering of the enviable features we see on screen. It’s the kind of place dreamers hope to be whisked away to, where lavish meals and leisurely garden walks are part of daily life. In reality, six different filming locations were pieced together to portray the house. Hatfield House and Cranborne Manor, both in England, were tapped to represent the main interiors and exterior, and fans can actually visit them.

At the surface level, the midcentury home in Fresh is as seemingly charming as its psychopathic owner. Even though there’s a terrifying dungeon level, the concrete floating staircase dug out of rock that leads to said level could be a cool feature if it, say, led to a home movie theater instead. Apart from that, the home features a healthy mix of wood paneling, exposed brick, and concrete. There’s a sunken living room filled with a myriad of artful seating options and a spacious kitchen complete with skylights. In reality, with a basement makeover, the residence could easily spark a potential buyer bidding war.

The Gothic mansion known as Allerdale Hall in director Guillermo del Toro’s Crimson Peak is simultaneously terrifying and enticing. Despite the fact that the English hillside home sits on a red clay mine and is rotting away, it’s packed with artistic details. The interior archways are accented by carved wood points that look like teeth, and wallpaper in a butterfly and moth design has the word “fear” hidden within its pattern, according to the Los Angeles Times. A real estate listing of the house might highlight the handful of fireplaces, high ceilings, an elevator that stops on all floors, and a collection of eccentric furnishings and decor. Plus, there are too many rooms to count—not a bad problem to have!
