There’s a reason why people scroll through listing after listing of luxury homes they can’t afford on Zillow—everyone likes getting a glimpse into how the other (read: wealthier) half lives. It’s the online equivalent of driving around the fancy neighborhoods in your town, musing with your friends and family about life would be like if you lived in that three-story McMansion with a pool in the backyard and an elevator in the foyer (that’s pronounced fwa-yay, obvi). Now, you don’t even need to move off your sofa to virtually zoom through those expensive neighborhoods all over the country, all thanks to the internet. (Or, no thanks to the internet, if you’re a privacy-loving denizen of one of those zip codes.)

So we asked our friends at Zillow to share data on the most expensive neighborhoods in the United States, and the results might actually surprise you. Only two states feature in this list of the top 10 communities—can you guess what they are? Known as Irvine's most prestigious neighborhood, Shady Canyon is a secluded, gated community nestled within a protected coastal landscape—which is a huge part of its charm. The expensive neighborhood houses around 400 custom-designed houses that boast an array of architectural styles, from Mediterranean, Tuscan, and Moorish, to French Provençal. The upscale nabe is in close proximity to two golf courses and comes with plenty of amenities, like tennis courts, a spa, and numerous trails that allow its residents to take in the gorgeous landscape.

Known for its notorious former resident, gangster Al Capone, the community of Palm Island is located in Biscayne Bay. It’s a man-made island that features extravagant and exclusive homes with views of the water and Miami skyline. Each one is unique, and this coveted neighborhood is still home to many renowned residents today (none of whom, we presume, are violent criminals).

It is extremely spacious, housing about 2,200 luxurious homes with large-sized lots for ample privacy. Each property has direct waterfront access.

This waterfront, gated community is extremely prestigious and highly exclusive; it's made up of around 170 homes in a range of styles from Spanish Mediterranean to Art Deco to sleek and modern. The high price tag of homes in the area isn't the only obstacle to settling down here; there are plenty of rules and regulations a person must follow if they're interested in buying a home in this neighborhood, such as going through a background check and submitting multiple letters of recommendation. But, of course, you can browse the listings for free, without jumping through a single hoop.
