Your bedroom is the most personal space you can decorate in your home. This sanctuary, where you sleep and unwind after a long day, can significantly impact your mood and mental health. Therefore, it deserves thoughtful decoration, even if your design tastes are a bit controversial. Specifically, we’re focusing on dark bedroom designs, with an emphasis on black bedroom ideas.
Decorating your room with a dark color palette—whether black, blue, green, eggplant, or another moody hue—can elevate its sophistication and elegance. It also allows you to highlight other colors or special decor pieces in your room. As you'll see in the following dark bedroom ideas, opting for a deep hue can still result in a playful and inviting space.

What makes this dark bedroom idea so stunning is the black details that aren't afraid to take up space. These include the painted wainscoting, the bed frame, the trim, and the chandelier. The designer of this room, Greg Natale, managed to give the area a dark feel without it feeling smothering thanks in part to the white ceiling and layering of patterns.
Though the team at Alice Lane Interior Design balanced out this dark bedroom idea with a light-colored bed and floors, they added dimension to the space by using a textured wallcovering instead of simply painting it black. This makes the space more interesting to the eye and less one-dimensional.
It can be easy for a dark bedroom idea to feel cramped, especially if you use a wallcovering that doesn't easily reflect the light. For this reason, you might want to consider choosing the largest room in the house for your moody retreat. The team at Alice Lane Interiors chose a room so large for their client's black bedroom that they were able to put the giant bed in the center of the space.
Dark colors in your bedroom can be used to push a sophisticated aesthetic, but that doesn't mean you can't have fun with it. In this funky bedroom, designer Hilary Matt used playful patterns and a black-and-white color scheme to make this boy's room feel cool and exciting.
In the same boy's bedroom as above, Hilary Matt also used stained black wood for this huge desk area that makes a statement. Staining it, in this case, was better than outright painting it because it highlights the woodgrain, adding more layers to the super-patterned space.
Cecilia Casagrande is no stranger to color, so in this painted black bedroom idea, she had to infuse at least a few bright accents into the space. To make sure the vivid yellow bedspread wouldn't look out of place, the designer added a matching decor piece on the wall so it all feels intentional.
If black is just a bit too intense for your liking, go with a monochromatic gray color scheme. In this guest bedroom designed by Doniphan Moore, this gray is meant to invite people to relax and stay a while.
If color-drenching your bedroom in dark hues isn't the move for you, you can still bring in a moody vibe by choosing black details on an otherwise neutral base. The designer of this space, Carrie Moore, explains, “We used black accents to add sophistication and drama to this bedroom. Black drapery and Roman shades bring new meaning to blackout window treatments! Layering black elements in an assortment of textures coordinates with, and softens, existing black architectural elements in the space.”

Don't Fully Commit
Nathan Schroder
Your bedroom doesn't have to be black to be super dramatic—choose a dark shade in a different hue to capture a similar effect. This bedroom by Doniphan Moore is still just as gorgeous and sophisticated as a black bedroom idea, and it even brings a warmer vibe thanks to the deep terra-cotta coloring.
Designer Gillian Segal wanted to make this room moody and monochromatic, so she used shades of black and gray to complete this sophisticated look. However, creating that vibe wasn't the only purpose of going fully dark. “This allows for so many vintage treasures to pop in the space,” Segal explains, as her clients are serious antique collectors.
In the same room as above, Gillian Segal didn't overlook a single detail in her monochromatic, dark bedroom idea. She even painted the door to the bedroom, which makes the room look even cozier.
Even if you love color, that doesn't mean you can't paint your bedroom walls a dark tone. Just look to designer Gina Sims for inspiration: She succeeded in building a moody space while infusing pops of color through the furnishings and decor. Sims created just enough balance for the darkness to not be overpowering.
Having windows that don't allow for a ton of natural light isn't always a bad thing, especially if you want a dark bedroom. In this rustic space, Gregory Carmichael designed an elegant room that doesn't feel stuffy or unwelcoming by using natural materials, earthy hues, and warm textures.

Match Your Furniture to the Walls
Hector Sanchez
In this bachelor's paradise, designer Andrew Brown transformed this guest room into a plush retreat, enveloping whoever stays in it in a swath of deep blue. Matching the furniture to the walls and using the decor to bring in other hues makes the room feel so elevated.
Adding both texture and interest into the space, Heidi Lachapelle's choice of William Morris Wandle wallpaper brings such a charming and enchanted vibe to the dark bedroom. “It’s a tucked away room so I wanted it to feel like a cozy escape,” Lachapelle says.
Another way to add lighter colors to your dark bedroom is by going with muted contrasting tones like in this child's bedroom by Joan Enger. The designer used a deep blue as the base with a dark orange to make up some of the details.
Commitment can be scary, so if you're not ready to fully immerse your bedroom into permanent darkness, opt for an accent wall to try it out. At the Kingsford Manor, design duo Prudence and Roger Kiessling used this large-paneled wood as an accent wall, choosing lighter colors for the rest of the room.
Don't be afraid to dive head-first into busy patterns when it comes to your dark bedroom—doing so can add so much depth and playfulness to your room. Designer Liz Caan went with a black-and-white gingham print wallpaper for this bedroom, highlighting the unique angle of the ceiling and bringing life into the space.

Pick Out Compatible Artwork
Erin Little
When selecting decorations—specifically artwork—that fit into your moody space, choose pieces from a darker palette as well on light backgrounds. Designer Blair Moore says of this gorgeous dark bedroom idea: “The art is a collection of vintage finds. [My clients] love boat paintings and since the house is by the water, we wanted to find some in earthy tones that would work within their room's palette.”
Here's a designer trick for a dark bedroom idea: Paint the ceilings to make it feel like a cave. This is especially important if you prefer total darkness when you sleep. In the same room as above, Blair Moore chose the same color of paint for the walls and low ceiling, but you can easily switch it up in your home and choose a different, equally as dark shade for your ceiling.
