One of the many skills an interior designer has is the ability to make anyone’s home look thoughtfully curated and tastefully designed, regardless of what their client’s budget is. While cost is not a concern for some, others may have a tight budget to adhere to, and it’s on the designers to incorporate the right mix of pieces into the space while still making the home look “expensive.” In these instances, designers have trusted retailers in their back pocket to pull from, and one of these tried-and-true spots is Anthropologie.
“We adore Anthropologie for accent pieces in our homes. They offer unique finishes and eclectic styles that bring whimsy and life to rooms at a great investment level. They are the perfect addition to create a vibrant high/low result,” Emilie Munroe, founder of Studio Munroe, says.
On top of finding pieces that give you your bang for your buck, designer Maria Tenaglia says she appreciates the brand’s pieces for their charm, color, and personality. “[The items] add personality to a room without feeling precious. In client projects, I recommend looking at their accent chairs, desks, mirrors, and lighting. These are categories where you can often find pieces with a strong point of view that mix well with antiques, custom furnishings, and higher-end materials,” she adds.
With Anthropologie’s wide array of home furniture and decor offerings, plus fresh collabs that keep the selections feeling relevant, it’s no wonder designers (and editors!) are completely obsessed with buying their products. Multiple designers we spoke with say Anthropologie carries great lamps and pendants. “We love incorporating lighting from Anthropologie,” designer JoAnna Baum says. “We love the unique and detailed lighting they provide; it always adds so much, and clients love it! They seem to be statement pieces that are not only unique but offer another layer that carries the room through time."
Anthro’s bedding and bath collection is packed with vibrant prints and whimsical designs that make your bedroom feel less boring. “We adore mixing sets of their patterned bedding for a layered, playful look in teen and children’s bedrooms. Pattern on pattern is festive with the added benefit of being easy to clean,” Munroe says.
Jess and Jonathan Nahon of Sugarhouse often turn to the brand for pieces that bring warmth and personality into the home. “We have used decorative mirrors, occasional furniture, rugs, hardware, and especially lighting fixtures in both residential and select retail projects. These are selected rather than overly designed. There is something refreshing about how playful and bespoke the products feel. The world seems tired of being swaddled in beige,” they add.
Anthropologie’s seating is full of personality, so whether you need a leather chair for the nook or a floral couch for the living room, you can find it online. “I think the most underrated Anthropologie category is their accent seating. A single chair can completely shift the tone of a room,” Tenaglia says. “In this project, the Judarn chair added a playful, collected quality against the more tailored elements in the bedroom—the grasscloth wallcovering, woven-front dresser, sculptural lamp, and layered textiles. It made the space feel more personal and less predictable.”
Did you know Anthropologie sells wallpaper? They have a wide selection that mirrors the colorful designs found in their upholstery. “[We used Anthro’s] wallpaper in a pool room. The design created an immediate impact, anchoring the space and delivering a highly immersive effect through a single bold material decision,” Sierra Fox, founder of Studio Mountain, says. “Anthropologie’s wallpaper range in general is particularly strong for this kind of application: graphic, playful, and well-suited to high-impact, smaller spaces.”
For those daily essentials you can’t find stylish versions of anywhere else—think tissue box covers, table linens, or even laundry items—check out Anthro. “A consistently reliable piece: Steele laundry bin, which has been specified across multiple projects,” Fox says.
The retailer is the perfect spot to get your bigger storage pieces, from dressers to cabinets. Fox used this hutch-like piece in a children’s room, custom-painted in pink, for one of her projects. “The piece functioned well as a soft statement storage element with a strong presence,” she notes.
When you’re looking for the little pieces to fill a room, Anthro offers some unique options. “It is where I often go for accents that can bring personality to a space without taking it over. I enjoy some of their occasional and side tables that sometimes introduce interesting textures and shapes, so you can control the curation from feeling too mass-produced,” Kanika Bakshi Khurana, founder of Kanika Design, says.
Khurana reveals she likes the brand for its variety of textiles, too. “Cushion covers, drapes, and comforters are usually very subtle patterns or textures that soften a room,” Khurana adds. “They do these better because depth is needed, but in each, you only need to change a couple of pieces for an entirely new style without having to redesign the whole wheel.”
Knobs
Both editors and designers love turning to the brand for the little accents that, while considered small details, make a big impact in the overall room. “Trays, knobs, hooks, and even tabletop decor can make a significant impact on how complete an area may feel. Such details usually go unnoticed, but they add coherence to the picture and highlight everyday usability,” Khurana says.
