It’s almost summer hosting season, and if your spot is where everyone likes to congregate, you need to start prepping your space…now. We’re big believers in not rushing to buy more tableware or seating at the last minute, because when you have the food to worry about and activities to plan for the kids, checking off what you can take care of now is crucial to maintaining order. If you want a dining table that fits many people in a small space, consider an extendable one. And not just any extendable one—we highly recommend Costco’s Transformer Table with soft, rounded edges.
For the uninitiated, the Transformer Table is known for creating space-efficient tables that can quite literally be adjusted to fit into virtually any space. The magic lies in its ball-bearing system, which means you can make it as small as two feet long or as big as a whopping nine feet long. Extend the table to your desired length and add the leaves to create a sturdy setup.
In fact, many options come with adjustable benches, so your guests will have somewhere to sit and snack. You'll have plenty of space for a full-blown dinner party when you need it—and an intimate bistro table for date nights at home. Magic? We certainly think so.
As genius as this space-efficient table is, the older styles look a little...well, basic. However, it's like Transformer Table was reading our minds because they dropped a new (and chicer) alternative. With a rounded tabletop and slotted base, this wooden option feels way more modern than the original version.
It also comes in three different colors—dark gray, brown, and natural—to fit in with most spaces. If you haven't been sold on the style alone, it's worth noting that this table's base also serves as hidden storage. Form, meet function.
“My sister-in-law bought a Transformer table for her home because it’s space-saving, and while I had my doubts about its quality, the table is very sturdy and durable,” says Senior Commerce Editor Marina Liao. “They don’t use placemats, and they have a toddler, so when I saw all the food grease and spills, I got worried for their table. However, a quick wipe down immediately removed all stains and debris, and the bench was surprisingly comfortable. I sat there for a few hours while we played a board game and felt perfectly at ease. I like that the set comes with chairs already, too, ensuring you can outfit your whole dining room in one fell swoop.”
The one catch? Depending on the exact color and configuration, the Transformer table is sold as two, six, or seven-piece sets, which can cost up to $4,400. While we've certainly seen more expensive dining room sets, you have to admit this one isn't exactly cheap. Not to mention you'll have to search high and low to find one at your local Costco—or wait up to three weeks if you order one online.
Don't worry, though: We found a bunch of shape-shifting alternatives that are not only cheaper, but might also be eligible for expedited shipping with your Amazon Prime membership. You can thank us later when you invite us to this table's inaugural dinner party!
