These are our favorites.
Generally speaking, the calendar year is mired in many significant days: We have the heavy-hitters like Thanksgiving and the Fourth of July, and we have the lower-lift celebrations, such as Presidents’ Day and Memorial Day. You get the picture. Well, as luck would have it, another big day is on the horizon, and we are whipping out our credit cards to celebrate. Earth Day is on April 22 this year, and there’s no better way to celebrate than by supporting a furniture brand whose biggest priority is sustainability.
That’s right; we did the research to curate a list of what we’d consider the most sustainably-minded furniture brands on which we are more than happy to shine a much-deserved light. So, if you’re decorating or redecorating, you may want to consider buying something artisan-made from one of these worthy brands. Below, find 19 companies that celebrate the planet before and after Earth Day. Sustainability is very much at the forefront of these brands’ thought processes, and we’re all about it.
Blu Dot

Blu Dot is out here making big promises; it is well on its way to keeping, starting with its pledge to use 100 percent sustainably sourced wood in all products by 2026. As far as current progress goes, all furniture made from teak is indeed 100 percent FSC-certified. Not to mention, 75 percent of the packaging contains less than five percent foam, and by 2026, 60 percent of collections will have zero foam. Perhaps the loftiest goal, though, is the brand’s mission to lower VOCs (volatile organic compounds), with 100 percent of products passing either the Intertek Gold or Silver Standard tests. So far, more than half of the products are certified Clean Air Gold or Silver. You can read our full review on all things BluDot here.
Urban Natural

Sustainability is in the name with Urban Natural. If you want to delve into the nitty-gritty, check out the brand’s “about” section on the website. Otherwise, here are some things to know: Everything sold on Urban Natural is ethically sourced, hand-made, crafted in the U.S., and has low chemical emissions.
Hati Home

On Hati Home’s website, the founders, Adam and Kallie Thomson say, “Sustainability is essential for us,” and that is obvious when you do a little digging into the pieces they sell. The materials are quite literally at the core of everything, and they’re all ethically sourced from around the world. That’s why everything is made with natural materials, like wood, rope, and rattan. You really can’t go wrong here if you’re into that quiet, organic look.
Etsy

Of course, the most sustainable way to shop for furniture is to buy pre-owned pieces. That way, no new materials or labor need to be used to craft a specialty piece. Etsy sells so much beautiful furniture that deserves a second chance. Plus, who doesn’t love a set of nesting tables with a few subtle dings that give them character? A lot of the time, Etsy sellers will completely fix up a relatively broken-down piece and make it like-new again, without sacrificing its original character and quality.
Neighbor

The outdoor furniture brand offers pieces made to last using quality materials. For instance, Neighbor uses FSC-certified teak wood, which is the gold standard in natural materials for outdoor pieces, to craft its tables and chairs, while its rugs are handwoven from recycled PET. Some of its fabrics, too, are made with post-industrial recycled content ranging from 50 percent to 93 percent, from the zero-waste Sunbrella factory in North Carolina. Neighbor's Sunbrella cushion fabrics and rug fibers are Standard 100 OEKO-TEX verified, too, which means they contain no harmful substances. You can check out all the materials and the brand's traceability directly on its website.
Oeuf

The moms on the House Beautiful team love Oeuf, a playful, eco-friendly children's clothing and furniture company based in New York City. Former editor Elyse Moody said: "I splurged on Oeuf for [my daughter's] nursery because it has such high eco standards and babies spend so much time sleeping. All of its products are GreenGuard Gold-certified and made to European standards, with nontoxic, water-based finishes. The packaging is made of recycled cardboard, and you can even recycle the furniture itself when it's no longer usable through an Oeuf program." At a high level: Oeuf's furniture is made in Latvia, known for its woodworking traditions, in a socially responsible FSC-certified facility with state-of-the-art dust collection to protect workers and the environment. Meanwhile, the team sources its alpaca and merino wool from places like Peru and Bolivia, working with the same artisans for nearly 20 years under fair-trade principles.
GreenRow

With a tagline like "Sustainably sourced. Designed to last," it's clear what GreenRow's mission is. The brand, launched by Williams-Sonoma, Inc. in 2023, uses sustainable, often recycled materials and manufacturing practices to create colorful, vintage-inspired pieces across multiple categories. You can shop for everything from rugs and bedding to lighting and curtains to baby and dinnerware. To provide as much transparency as possible to consumers, you can find a list of GreenRow's certifications and partners on its website. At a glance, the label partners with Fair Trade USA, Nest’s Ethical Handcraft Program, and others to promote worker well-being throughout its supply chain. GreenRow also plants a tree for every piece of wood furniture sold.
Avocado

Not only does Avocado offer incredible, non-toxic, eco-friendly mattresses, but it also offers 100 percent reclaimed-wood furniture as a Certified B-Corporation! You can deck out your bedroom with responsibly made mattresses, bed frames, dressers, and end tables. Avocado is also GOTS and FSC certified.
Sabai

Sabai's offerings focus on sustainable cozy seating arrangements perfectly packed in plastic-free boxes. The sofas are made with natural fibers and polyester from recycled water bottles, while the frames are FSC-certified wood and CertiPUR-US foam. To lessen their carbon footprint, Sabai uses local materials and ethical production in High Point, North Carolina. What's even better? You can trade in your Sabai or swap out pieces that wear over time.
Chairish

Chairish is the vintage lover's dream come true. You can find everything through this online furniture store, wardrobes, storage, accent chairs, cabinets—you name it! The pieces curated by experts are chosen using their certified sustainability training to offer a diverse inventory of products.
Keter

Founded in 1948, Keter is known for its resin-based sustainable outdoor furniture, storage, and garden essentials. Shoppers can find innovative tool storage systems, multi-functional organization products, and furniture that they can bring in and out of their homes. Keter makes an eco-conscious living approachable and simple, thanks to their 100 percent recyclable plastic offerings crafted to last and better the environment.

The brand even uses leftover wood chips to heat its facilities.
Maiden Home

This luxurious brand focuses on creating responsibly sourced, non-toxic furniture with a lifetime guarantee. Maiden Home crafts tables, seating, bedroom and dining furniture, and ottomans handmade to order using CertiPUR-US and GREENGUARD Gold certified materials. The brand seeks to create furniture that lasts and places an emphasis on educating its customers on everything they need to know about furniture.
Room & Board

Since 1980, Room & Board furniture has made a positive impact on the design community. The brand creates timeless and durable modern furniture crafted with high-quality materials (sustainably sourced wood, recycled plastic, recycled steel, and recycled fabric). With a high score on the Wood Furniture Scorecard and partnerships for social and environmental causes, sustainability is threaded in everything from couches to bookshelves.
Joybird

This custom-made midcentury modern furniture shop plants trees with One Tree Planted for each item sold. Desks, bookshelves, tables, chairs—you can score chic furniture with the planet in mind that blends in with your existing decor. Even better, at its factory in Mexico, the brand provides its workers with competitive wages, medical benefits, and a healthy environment.
