I’m a pretty finicky sleeper. I can’t fall asleep unless I’m on my side in a semi-fetal position. I have a preferred side (left) of the bed, and even as I toss and turn throughout the night, I prefer side-sleeping, but the danger with this is that your spine is usually out of alignment. Unless you have the right pillows. I already had a sleeping pillow I was in love with, but I just upgraded to a knee pillow, and my nighttime routine is so much smoother now.

I’ve slept with body pillows (or just tucked a regular pillow between my knees) for years, and at first I just thought it made me more comfortable. But really, it’s saving me trips to the chiropractor. When you sleep on your side, your knees stack, and one tends to droop over the other. This pulls your hips forward while your shoulders stay back, curving your spine into an “S” shape. This becomes painful over time, so having a pillow that keeps your knees in line with each other is a huge help.

And now, you don’t need to just use any old pillow. Brands make pillows designed for ergonomic support between your knees while you sleep. I personally tested Helix’s Side Sleeper Knee pillow, and my back is so grateful. It’s made from a plush, yet resilient memory foam core, so I’m resting somewhere soft without giving up support. Plus, the machine-washable cover is made from cooling TENCEL fibers, so I don’t overheat at night.

Helix’s knee pillow comes with a strap you wrap around your leg, so it can stay put without you squeezing your legs together. It has a divot on both sides, almost like a butterfly pillow for cervical neck support. My knees rest comfortably in the contours, and I feel so cocooned and held in place that it’s much easier to fall asleep. I’m convinced all my fellow side sleepers will fall in love with it, too. If you don’t, though, there’s a 30-night sleep trial included, so you can return it worry-free.
