'Oranges, lemons, and grapefruits are holiday staples,' says Craig. Save the peels and dry them out — their natural oils release a fresh, zesty scent that pairs perfectly with festive spices. For quicker results, use an air fryer’s dehydration setting or bake them on a low heat in the oven.
Repurpose apple skins and cores
Apple pies and crumbles may be seasonal favourites, but their leftovers are just as valuable. 'Dried apple slices, peels, and cores add a subtly sweet fragrance to potpourri,' says Craig. Dust them with cinnamon before drying to enhance their warm, holiday aroma.
Add festive spices
Got leftover cinnamon sticks or cloves? Old spices like nutmeg, star anise, and cloves release their scent gradually, giving your potpourri a nostalgic, long-lasting fragrance. Craig recommends using up any older spices you already have at home to deepen the festive scent.
