Justin Coakley's home is a masterclass in understated, sophisticated design, but we fell hard for the colour and abundance of his table settings – in particular, an autumnal harvest tablescape that looked like an Old Master oil painting come to life.

As the winner of Best Tablescape in House Beautiful’s Real Style Awards 2026, we asked Justin (@design_at_nineteen) exactly how he creates an atmosphere for guests when he entertains in his 1930s semi in London. He also shares his top tip for creating an expensive tablescape on a budget and the one item he uses to instantly elevate a table.

What’s your decorating style in three words?

Timeless, earthy, layered – with a nod to the contemporary. Sorry! It’s too hard to describe in only three words.

What’s the best lesson you’ve learnt about tablescaping?

It's about so much more than just laying a table. It’s about creating a moment, bringing a sense of drama, beauty, and even a little surprise for your guests. It sets the tone, tells a story, and makes people feel like they’re part of something special the moment they sit down.

If you could give our readers one piece of advice for designing a beautiful tablescape, what would it be?

Be intentional. Don’t just lay a table – create a feeling. Think about the atmosphere you want your guests to experience the moment they sit down. Layer textures, play with height, and don’t be afraid to add an unexpected detail that can spark conversation.

What was the biggest challenge in designing this tablescape?

Justin’s winning tablescape

The biggest challenge was creating a harvest-inspired tablescape that felt elegant rather than overtly Halloween. I wanted to nod to the season through warm tones and texture, without relying on ghosts or predictable decor. It was all about striking that balance – keeping it refined, timeless and inviting, while still capturing the essence of this time of year.

Any surprising shortcuts you’ve learned?

A surprising little hack I discovered was to use wooden cocktail sticks to secure everything in place for the harvest-inspired fruit board. It helped keep everything stable and allowed the display to hold its shape beautifully. Being able to build height and structure made the arrangement look abundant and polished.

What’s the stage of decorating that makes you do a happy dance?

Adding the final pieces — the little details that bring personality and that 'fun factor' to the table. They’re usually the talking points that pull the whole scheme together and make everything feel complete. That’s the moment it all clicks, and I know the vision has come to life.

What’s one inexpensive item which you think instantly elevates a tablescape?

One inexpensive way to instantly elevate a tablescape is to forage greenery and flowers. There’s something so beautiful and organic about using what’s naturally around you to bring texture, movement and a really effortless elegance without costing a thing. If you don’t have a garden, you can always look to local parks or open spaces for seasonal foliage, but check that you're permitted to forage first.

How can you make a tablescape feel expensive when you’re on a budget?

My top tip for making a tablescape feel expensive is to lean into flowers, fruit and candlelight. Flowers and fruit instantly create that abundant, layered look that feels luxurious, especially when styled in tonal shades and varied heights. And don't underestimate the power of candles – candlelight adds warmth and ambience, instantly making any setting feel more intimate, refined and high-end.

What does ‘home’ mean to you?

Home is my safe haven and my creative hub. It’s where my home office and studio are – a place where I can create, feel inspired, and showcase my work. But it’s also my happy place where I can retreat from the world and truly switch off. It’s where I feel most myself, and where I gather the people I love, hosting friends and family and creating memories together.
