If you've not heard of Margate House – a Georgian townhouse-turned-hotel on the Kent coast with a design treatment to die for – you've probably bookmarked it on Instagram.
With its cool, mid-century shapes teamed with eclectic artwork and a rich, feminine colour palette, those of us on the interiors scene have long considered it an inspiration as much as a dreamy destination. From colour-capping to panelling, its rooms are a masterclass in paint technique and the best colours for the job.
Now, the very shades that have built its cult following – and are constantly requested in the hotel's comments section on Instagram – are finally available to bring home.
Just in time for spring, Margate House has partnered with COAT Paints on a limited-edition capsule collection, making its once closely-guarded palette shoppable for the first time. The six shades — originally developed specifically for the boutique hotel — have been designed to capture the soft, coastal light and creative, bohemian energy of Margate itself.
Shunning trends, the indulgent collection is a tribute to the hotel's characterful seaside home. Each colour is named after a local spot, from 'Wilderness Hill', a deep, earthy red that adds instant drama, to 'Love Lane', a dusky, terracotta-leaning rose that feels ethereal and romantic.
The final curation of hues sit together harmoniously, whether placed to enhance or complement one another. Chalky neutrals, sun-softened pinks and grounding off-whites evolve and shift beautifully throughout the day, whichever way your rooms face.
What to Read Next
- Shell Grotto – Stony, shell-toned off-white
- Evening, Ethel – Muted, powdery blush pink

For COAT, the collaboration marks a shift towards designing colour within real spaces, rather than in isolation. 'This collaboration let us design colour around a real setting, rather than a passing trend,' says co-founder Rob Abrahams. 'Every shade is deliberate – created to influence mood, bring character and capture the essence of coastal living.'
That sense of cohesion is exactly what has made Margate House so visually distinctive. 'It started with colour, and everything else fell into place from there,' adds Margate House founder Will Jenkins. 'Having the whole hotel unified in one palette has helped us build an identity that people clearly want to recreate in their own homes.'
Alongside its aesthetic appeal, the collection stays true to COAT’s design-conscious, low-impact approach. The paints are water-based, low-toxin and made to order in the UK, with a durable, high-coverage finish suited to everyday living.
Available in six finishes and priced from £32 per litre, the full COAT x Margate House collection launches on 1st May via COAT’s website – and, if Instagram is anything to go by, it won’t stay under the radar for long. We'll take 100 tins, please!
