Big, bold and just the right amount of playful, polka dots are one of fashion's most enduring patterns. First popularised in the 1960s, the statement spots have a knack for feeling perpetually fresh, never straying far from the style spotlight.
This year, however, they're enjoying a particularly standout season, emerging as one of the defining prints of the summer across both fashion and interiors.
Megastar Olivia Dean, who has turned polka dots into something of an unofficial dress code, might have had a hand in the rise of the stylish spots, but interiors experts point to another well-cited reason.
'The reason polka dots are gaining so much traction right now is that people are looking to inject personality and a sense of playfulness back into their living spaces,' explains Lauren Kavanagh, art director at wallpaper manufacturer Hovia.
True polka dots are made up of a series of evenly spaced, round circles of the same size – and arguably, they're at their most impactful when they're supersized.
So while decorative objects like bowls or table lamps covered in dots are undoubtedly charming, the pattern really comes into its own across a larger canvas, whether that's curtains, an upholstered armchair or – for a slightly less daring option – a bedding set.
