When it comes to tweens and teenagers, girls' bedrooms can become even trickier to decorate – minds can be changed at the drop of a hat and colour schemes that were liked a few months ago can be suddenly deemed as 'not cool'. The key here is to create a room that can be changed quickly, and white works well as that blank canvas. There are other tricks too, like only papering one wall instead of all four, and if you're on a budget, simply updating bedding or cushions can work wonders.

It really adds a decorative touch when you peek through the doorway and the pretty colours make it easy to accessorise the rest of the room. The combination of stripes and checks works really well too for a girls' bedroom, and adding a tactile element like the sheepskin rug is a great idea for young children as touch is so important.

Another fabulous colour to consider for a girl's bedroom is sunshine yellow. It's bright and cheery and looks great with white. And, it can work well for boys too. Follow the colour through into the bedding – a cushion and a throw in a similar shade works wonders for a cohesive look.

The fun thing about designing a girl's bedroom is that with the base colour of pink, you can mix and match different patterns to achieve a cosy look. Florals, spots and graphic prints all work well together as long as you have the common link of one colour. The apple green looks great too with this pastel pink, so consider introducing it as a pretty option.

Shutters are a great way to add a burst of colour to an otherwise neutral scheme, or to add a punchier look to an existing group of colours. They're great for privacy and you can adjust the amount of light that comes through. It also works well during the warmer months to add shade and keep the bedroom cool. The beauty of an all-white girls' bedroom scheme is that it's essentially a blank canvas that can be changed up as and when. Bedding and accessories add the colour and pattern and look out for ways to make the space more individual. There's a point where pink won't really cut it, then it's time to ramp up the colours a tad and choose a punchier palette. Although there is black and scarlet in this room, which could be heavy on the eye, it works really well due to the white ceiling and woodwork. When kids get older, they get more fussy they want a grown up look that's still 'cool' and using a pop of colour like bright pink can be the little bit extra that will tick their trendy needs. You could create this pink stripe with paint or washi tape. The advantage of washi tape is that it's easy to remove if they get bored of it a few weeks later – or easy to add more if they love it! Pull the accent colour through into cushions and trinkets.

Loft extensions make great bedrooms for those who are slightly older – at the top of the house there's a feeling of independence and being slightly away from the parents! Loft bedrooms can be dark though, so opting for white walls and floors can be a great idea, then, what light does come through can be bounced about by the white. Place the bed in the most prominent position and use the lower sides for storage. Add in some pattern with checks, spots and florals and choose a blind to match.

Using paint as a decorative element is a really fun way to make walls look individual. For this girls' bedroom idea, use a circle template to make the gold dots after you've painted the wall pink. And don't forget you can paint furniture too – this elegant side table is painted black with a gold drawer to match the walls. Then add in a gold pendant and some dusky pink bedding to accessorise.

Sometimes a fluffy high pile carpet isn't always the most practical option with little kids. For a girls' bedroom idea, have a look at vinyl instead – it's warm underfoot, feels cushioned and it's super practical; for starters it can deal with spills and felt tips that have gone astray.
