We’re all familiar with fast fashion and the negative connotations that come with it – unsustainable in its grift to show us new, shiny things that only briefly satiate, before urging us to seek out the next dopamine fix. Yet the world of homes is not exempt from this instant gratification approach.
TV makeover shows are partially responsible for beguiling us into believing that creating an interior worthy of a ‘big reveal’ can happen in a matter of days, and over the years I’ve played my part in this narrative. But remember, it’s merely entertainment and no one is going to tune in to literally watch paint dry! After the credits roll, you want to sit back and love the home you’re in, so it’s time to take it slow.
Slow decorating is all about furnishing our homes in a thoughtful and intentional way. It takes time to both collect and reflect on the things you love that are going to tell your own story and avoid that soulless catalogue look. Central to this concept is investing in quality pieces that will stand the test of time. Few of us have the budget to buy everything on our wishlist up front, but this is where a bit of a ‘make do and mend’ attitude comes into play.
My key piece of advice is to have a vision from the get-go: a road map, if you like, so you know what you’re working towards. Nail your personal colour palette before rushing out to buy the paint that will become the foundation to your scheme, and seek out affordable vintage and pre-loved items that will not only add character but also support sustainable practices.
It’s also about the thrill of discovering that perfect piece, whether it’s an antique chair from the flea market or a bespoke artwork from a local artist. So think about embracing patience, really valuing craftsmanship and creating a home that is an authentic reflection of who you are. When you avoid the flashy, fast, TV-style reveal, you embark on a rewarding journey of self-discovery, celebrating the joy of creating a home you’ll love for years to come.
