'It's the perfect vehicle for carrying a scheme; offering both comfort and the ability to carry rich colour, it can be dressed up with statement wallpapers, paint and textiles or, if you want to hero your furniture, pair upholstery pieces with calm neutrals.'
Velvet sofas are both luxurious and versatile, but it's important that this tactile material is cleaned carefully. Gisela advises: 'Velvet does need to be treated with extra care, but it can be a durable option if well looked after. It's key to regularly hoover your sofa to remove surface dirt, and if spills do occur, make sure you blot the stain and then use warm water and baking soda to remove stains. Regularly plumping your cushions will also help maintain your sofa.'
