From sparkly silver baubles to contemporary silver wreaths...
It doesn’t get much more contemporary than silver Christmas decorations – the perfect addition to any festive interior with a modern twist. Cool tones and the ability to reflect light mean that silver decorations are a brilliant choice if you want your home to feel festive but still look light and bright.
'The festive period is the perfect opportunity to add silver decorations to your home,' says Melissa Williams, director of MW Studio. 'You might even be able to use silver decorations for other occasions throughout the year, such as a dinner party.' Versatile decorations? Who doesn't love decor that can do it all?
Whether it's sparkly silver baubles, modern nutcrackers with a silver finish, or contemporary silver wreaths, there's something for every home this Christmas.
Silver Christmas decorations work best in modern interiors, particularly those decorated in neutral or light tones. Sam Hood, co-founder and chief creative officer at Amara, explains: 'Silver is a great option for a modernist style, where gold will appear too out of place. Silver works much better than gold in rooms where whites or greys are the dominant colour, and also pairs well with colours such as blues or greens.
'Like gold, silver can add a touch of luxury to a room, and works particularly well as a festive highlight for modernist decor, where monochrome tones or colder colours are dominant. It's much less traditional in festive decor than gold, so it can be used a bit more freely in your design.'
You have plenty of choices when it comes to styling silver Christmas decorations, simply choose if you want to go all-out, or choose a more understated look.
'With silver, you can choose to use it as an accent through the use of luxury home accessories and ornaments, or you can use it on a larger scale,' says Sam. 'You can make use of silver wreaths, or make a festive floral decoration of silvered branches and flowers, which perfectly mirrors frosted branches on a cold Christmas morning!'
We recommend mixing and matching different silver baubles for a sleek yet eclectic look on your Christmas tree – this should also reflect lots of light around the room. Silver candle holders also do this brilliantly.
For maximum effect, choose bold accent pieces to catch the eye and create visual focal points in your festive interior. Melissa agrees: 'Buy a couple of statement pieces – a stunning tree topper, some luxurious pillows, an exquisite serving tray – and put them to work.'
Melissa also suggests picking decorations that reflect the already established style of your interior: 'Think about whether you're going for a modern silver look or a traditional silver look and pick pieces that complement the desired style. If you're going modern, then think smooth lines and not much fuss – plain baubles over fancy ones, for example. If you're going for the traditional look, then look for pieces with more detail, which will add layers and textures to your home.'
