While some parts of the UK are still gripped by frost and icy mornings, gardeners in milder regions can start thinking about early planting – and February can be a surprisingly productive month in the garden.

In sheltered, free-draining spots — and provided the soil isn’t frozen or waterlogged — certain hardy perennials can be planted now, particularly in milder southern and coastal areas. Getting them in the ground early gives roots time to establish before spring properly gets under way.

Joshua Allan, garden designer with Top Tier Greenery, says 'While any new planting needs water to get it established, it’s less stressful on plants this time of year. They also won’t need watering as frequently.'

A few extra precautions will help ensure new additions get off to a strong start.

'I like to mulch a little thicker in the cooler months of the year to help protect roots from the wild temperature swings you can get in winter,' says Kristian Thiem, landscape and outdoor living designer with Tidal Creek Designs. 'It’s not unusual to have temperatures fluctuating 30 degrees. I also use a frost cover if we have recently installed plants and are expecting a freeze.'
