Delphiniums are set to be one of the most sought-after flowers of 2026 – and they are exactly what your garden needs if you want height, colour and classic cottage charm.
Named the 2026 Flower of the Year, delphiniums are loved for their tall spires of blue, purple, pink and white flowers, bringing instant structure and summer drama to borders, patios and pots. Better still, these elegant perennials attract bees and butterflies, and make spectacular cut flowers for indoor arrangements.
Why is delphinium the 2026 flower of the year?
Crowned by 1-800-Flowers.com, delphinium represents hope, elevation, and positivity towards the future — but its selection also taps into the growing popularity of calm luxury and romantic cottage garden planting.
‘The tall flowers can add height without feeling too imposing, and they can fit into cottage gardens or into a floral arrangement,’ says Richard Barker, horticultural expert at LBS Horticulture. ‘True blue flowers can be rare naturally, and delphiniums can have an almost fairytale quality that makes them feel extra special.’
Bridgerton-inspired pale blues and lilacs were also highlighted by Pinterest Predicts 2026 as part of its Cool Blue trend, with searches for delphiniums, hydrangeas and nigella all rising.
Top delphinium growing tips
When planting delphiniums, choose a sunny spot with moist but well-draining soil. While they can be planted at any time of year, spring and autumn are best, as cooler, damp conditions help plants establish more successfully. Taller varieties should also be staked early to support their dramatic flower spikes.
‘As they can potentially grow to 2m tall, they should not be grown somewhere windy as this can blow the plants over,’ says Richard. ‘In spring, delphiniums will need to be protected from slugs – and this is also the best time to stake plants if you are growing a taller variety.
‘The plant thrives in cooler temperatures and needs slightly moist soil in summer, so ensure that the plants do not dry out in hot weather.’
Plus, adding grit to the soil at planting time can help improve drainage and protect plants during wet winter weather.
‘Delphiniums can be hungry plants and will need feeding regularly, so provide them with a liquid fertiliser every few weeks once their first shoots appear to encourage strong growth,’ says Richard.
To encourage more blooms later in the season, remove flower spikes as soon as they fade. Once flowering finishes in autumn, plants should be cut back to ground level to keep them healthy year after year.
