'As these timeless favourites brighten up our gardens again, it's a lovely reminder that beauty from the past still has plenty to offer today,' says Julian Palphramand, head of plants at British Garden Centres. 'When you plant these retro blooms, you're not just growing flowers but sharing a piece of garden heritage that can be enjoyed for years to come.'

Prized for their ruffled petals and show-stopping colours, dahlias are the stars of late summer gardens — and look just as lovely tumbled into a jug on the kitchen table.
Loved since the Victorian era, dahlias were symbols of elegance, wealth, and devotion. Today, their timeless beauty still shines, with a surge in popularity among modern gardeners and stylists.
'They thrive in fertile, well-drained soils with plenty of sunlight, and with regular deadheading and feeding, they can provide an extended flowering season well into the autumn months,' says Julian.
'Taller dahlias may need staking for support, and remember to lift the tubers over winter to keep this retro flower in the best condition for the next year.'
'Chrysanthemums are often associated with vintage gardens and come in shades like white, yellow, orange, purple, and red,' says Julian.
Originally grown as a herb for its medicinal properties, chrysanthemums deliver a last-minute blast of colour during autumn. To keep yours blooming, continue watering well and feeding to encourage bushy growth.
Lilacs have graced gardens for centuries, with their fragrant clusters of purple, white, and pink flowers heralding the arrival of spring. Beloved for their beauty and versatility, they make elegant additions to bouquets and timeless choices for hedging.

'The later-flowering Paniculata types have seen the biggest rise due to the increased range available and the fact that they flower strongly after many other garden shrubs have finished their display,' Julian explains.
Symbolising love, patience, and wisdom, asters have been admired since Victorian times for their starry, daisy-like blooms. Today, these fast-growing annuals are enjoying a spectacular comeback as one of the UK’s fastest-rising cut flowers.
Supermarket giant Tesco reports demand has skyrocketed: from 100,000 bunches grown in 2022 to an astonishing 1.2 million in 2025.
Jamie Simpson, Tesco Flowers expert and technical manager, says: 'Asters are glorious flowers that have only recently come back into vogue with growers but in just two years have made a sensational impact with shoppers.'
'Marigolds are a classic garden favourite and add a burst of bright orange, yellow, and red to any garden space, whether it be borders, containers, or window boxes,' says Julian.
Ensure you water at the base of the plant to avoid mildew. Don't forget to deadhead to encourage a second flush of flowers.
Renowned for their large, romantic blooms in shades of pink, red, or white, peonies have long been celebrated for their beauty. Their opulent flowers were a highlight of 19th-century cottage gardens, and heirloom varieties such as the much-loved ‘Sarah Bernhardt’, introduced in 1906, are still grown today. A true symbol of endurance, peonies can thrive for decades.
'Blooming from late spring to early summer, peonies prefer a sunny spot with rich, moist but well-drained soil,' advises Julian. 'Their crowns should be planted just below the surface, and mulching along with spring feeding supports healthy growth.'
Sweet peas are quintessential cottage garden flowers, valued for their charm and nostalgia as much as their fragrance.
'Picking sweet pea blooms regularly encourages more flowering, and they can be used as a cut flower to bring a beautiful perfume into your home,' adds Julian.
Add some vintage charm to your beds and borders with towering delphiniums.
'These are also being revived in UK gardens, celebrated for their tall, colourful blue, pink and white spikes,' says Julian. 'Once a classic garden favourite, they're now popular again for both outdoor planting and cut flower arrangements, appearing regularly at shows like RHS Chelsea.'
'Dianthus is another flower making a comeback due to interest in cottage garden styles reviving its popularity, with gardeners appreciating its nostalgic versatility as both a garden plant and cut flower,' says Julian.
Great for pots and containers, they are easy to grow and will continue to bloom after deadheading.
