Are you a busy gardener short on time? From cosmos to salvias, many long-lasting flowers bloom for weeks each year and come back on their own with minimal effort.

These popular flowers can be planted straight into the soil as seeds (if frost risks have passed), while some perform better if they are first grown inside.

'If you're just starting in the garden, long-lasting flowers are a brilliant place to begin. Rather than constantly replanting, these reliable bloomers keep going long after others have faded,' says Julian Palphramand, head of plants at British Garden Centres.

'Once they're in the ground, they pretty much get on with it, making them ideal whether you're a beginner still finding your feet or simply someone who doesn't have much time to spare. Low maintenance and unfussy, they'll reward you with beautiful flowers without demanding too much in return.'

'Cosmos started now will bloom profusely and continuously, providing delicate, daisy-like flowers throughout the season,' says Julian.

These sun-loving annuals can be sown as seeds indoors in March/April, or directly outdoors in May after the last frost. Deadhead to prolong flowering.

French marigolds are another long-lasting summer flower to plant now before it's too late. Julian suggests planting them inside first, then moving them out after the last frost. 'Thin the seedlings so each one has room to grow strong,' he says.

They're also brilliant for beginners. 'Being low maintenance, they thrive in a variety of conditions and are ideal for borders, pots and vegetable gardens,' says a gardening expert from B&Q.

'Available as bedding plants or seeds, marigolds are a favourite for vibrant summer displays, delivering long‑lasting colour throughout the season and helping to brighten borders and containers.'

'Try hardy perennials such as geraniums, echinacea, and salvia in your borders, as they bloom for weeks each year and come back on their own with minimal effort,' says Julian.

Before you plant, just ensure the ground isn't waterlogged.

Pretty petunias bloom abundantly from late spring to autumn, providing endless colour in the garden. If you're looking for cheery and colourful displays, they are perfect for filling pots, containers, and hanging baskets.

'Petunias perform well in pots; pinch off dead flowers and feed weekly to keep them flowering,' adds Julian.
