These sun-loving varieties will fill your garden with interest even during a heatwave
Don't let July's soaring temperatures spoil your summer garden displays. There might be another heatwave on our doorstep, but some colourful bedding plants thrive in hot, sunny weather, keeping borders and containers looking their best for longer.
From sun-seeking zinnias to classic verbenas, these easy-to-grow bedding plants often have deep or extensive root systems which can access moisture deeper in the soil, and are naturally adapted to sunny climates.
'As UK summers become warmer, we are seeing more gardeners choose plants that naturally cope better with heat and dry conditions,' says Anthony Croke, plant manager at Almondsbury Garden Centre. 'If you're worried about keeping your garden looking its best through periods of hot weather, choosing the right plants can make a huge difference.'
Take a look at the bedding plants that are more likely to survive extreme heat:
Zinnias are sun-loving varieties, preferring temperatures between 21°C and 29°C.
'When growing, zinnia seeds need warm soil to germinate and develop strong root systems,' says Richard Barker, horticultural expert and commercial director of LBS Horticulture.
'Mature plants require at least six to eight hours of sunlight daily to bloom to their full potential. They can be used as 'cut and come again' flowers, as the more you deadhead faded flowers, the more new flowers the plant will produce.'
Prized for its heat tolerance and vibrant blooms, lantana is another excellent option for a sun-soaked garden. According to Richard, they need at least six hours a day of sunlight to thrive and love temperatures above 15°C.
'An insufficient amount of light can actually lead to pale blooms and yellowing leaves,' he says. 'It prefers to be grown in loose, sandy soils, and once mature, it is very drought-tolerant. You can encourage the plant to produce more flowers by cutting off old flower clusters just below the head.'
One of the best performers in heat, these cheerful yellow flowers thrive in sunny containers, hanging baskets, and patio pots. For optimal blooming, choose a location that receives lots of sunlight.
Gazanias, also known as treasure flowers, will only open their heads in direct, strong sunlight.
'The plant actually prefers hot, dry weather, and will grow better when its soil is allowed to dry out between waterings,' says Richard. 'Deadheading the plants regularly can ensure that you have a continuous supply of flowers through the summer.'
'Pelargoniums thrive in full sun and can withstand very high temperatures as long as they are not overwatered,' says Richard.
Just ensure they are watered sparingly. Allow the soil to dry out between waterings to avoid root rot. When the flowers fade, snip them off at the base to encourage a new flush of blooms.
'Verbena thrives in the heat and sun, and needs at least six to eight hours of sunlight daily,' says Richard.
'Once established, they can be fairly drought-tolerant, but will grow best if watered regularly. Regularly removing faded flowers can encourage the plant to produce more flowers and stop it from directing its energy into producing seed.'
