Marks & Spencer is selling a limited edition Celebration Orchid for Chinese New Year.

The beautifully hooped purple phalaenopsis orchid, presented in a glass pot, is the perfect way to brighten up your home this spring.

The orchid, on sale for £20, is extra special. It comes with a red envelope, traditionally given as a gift in China during social and family gatherings including Chinese New Year, to symbolise luck and good fortune.

The M&S limited edition orchid comes blank, so you can write a personal message to a friend or loved one.

‘We’re very excited about our spectacular Chinese New Year orchid, its strikingly beautiful colour and shape will brighten up your home this spring,’ said M&S Product Developer Julia Bradley. ‘We’ve added a red envelope, inspired by traditions in China, that will hopefully bring you good luck!’

M&S is also selling the Phalaenopsis Orchid – a sublime single stem orchid, that can flower for up to three months or more, presented in a contemporary white ceramic plant pot. It’s currently on offer for half price (was £16, now £8).

Whatever you choose, remember – orchids do require some care. The plants need a stable temperature; light but no direct sunlight, and the bark compost should be moist, but not wet. M&S suggests after flowering you should cut back the stem part-way down, just above a node or ‘eye’, while the stem is still green. New growth will start from this node and may produce some further flowers after 2-3 months.
