Southampton has been crowned the best UK city for renting with pets, thanks to the lack of rent price 'penalties' for pet owners and its low number of pet-related neighbour complaints.
Conducted by Towergate Insurance, the study analysed 25 major UK cities against 10 various criteria points to find out which locations are the best for those with pets. From affordable rent prices, to pet-friendly landlords, rentals with private gardens and areas listed as 'pets allowed', these are the cities that tick all the boxes.
Nottingham and Manchester came second and third place respectively, with Derby and Birmingham also following close behind. Plymouth, Coventry and Stoke-on-Trent also made the top 10.
Elsewhere in the research, Bradford was found to have the highest number of affordable pet-friendly rentals (with an average monthly rent of just £417.50), while Manchester has the most available rentals that were listed as 'pets allowed' (119 live listings).
'Ticking an array of pet-friendly boxes, Southampton stands head and shoulders above other cities, and our research helped crown the coastal city as the most "pet-friendly" city for renters in the UK,' says Alison Wild, SME marketing business partner at Towergate Insurance.
For many years, renters have found it a struggle to find a home where their pet is as welcomed as they are. Charities, such as the Dog's Trust, have been calling on landlords to be more lenient when it comes to accepting pets. While not every city in the UK favours pets with renters, this research does uncover some of the best areas to consider.
