German pharmaceuticals company DocMorris has unveiled a tearjerking Christmas advert which tells the story of an elderly man's bond with his granddaughter.

Hailed as the 'best Christmas advert' of the season, the two-minute clip sees the man embark on a solo fitness quest in the run-up to the holidays, lifting dumbbells in his shed.

At first, the elderly man struggles to lift the weights, confusing inquisitive neighbours who wonder what he is up to. Determined to never give up, we then see the man reach for a photograph of his young granddaughter, which he uses as motivation.

With much perseverance, he keeps trying each day until he eventually succeeds, becoming stronger and lifting heavier weights.

At the end of the clip we see why he was training: so he was strong enough to lift his granddaughter up to put the star on top of the Christmas tree.

The ad finishes with a German slogan which reads: 'So that you can take care of what really matters in life'.
