Are you looking for a natural alternative to chemical descalers and a hassle-free way to clean a kettle? Well it couldn't be easier to remove built-up limescale – all you need to use is a squeeze of lemon juice.

Sharing before and after pictures on popular Facebook cleaning group, Mrs Hinch Cleaning Tips, Lauren Jones explained how filling the kettle with lemon juice and putting it on to boil can revive its shine and remove limescale.

Lauren poured lemon juice into the kettle, left it for one hour, added some water and pressed boil. 'Soon all the limescale will start to go,' she said.

The post garnered much interest with members of the social media cleaning community. One said: 'Thank you Lauren for your original post and thank you for all the helpful tips. I did mine today after seeing this and it's like a new kettle,' while another said: 'I spend too much of my life buying descaler and never have it when I need it so this is like music to my ears!'

High in citric acid and antibacterial properties, lemons not only smell fresh but is great for cleaning household items as they are unlikely to cause damage to surfaces and appliances.

Another way to remove limescale from an electric kettle is to use white vinegar. This works similar to lemon juice and works equally well if you haven't got any lemons at home. Simply pour a splash of vinegar inside your kettle, add water, boil, and rinse well. You'll be amazed at the results.
