You might think you've finished decorating and styling a room in your home — you've mastered your home decor, or even have new furniture pieces — but the one element you might be forgetting is fragrance. If candles are a no-go because of safety reasons, then why not use a reed diffuser in your living room or hallway? It's the perfect way to welcome guests and to ensure your home evokes a wow-worthy scent. A great alternative to scented candles, these are our tried and tested favourites for 2025.
A reed diffuser is what it says — reed sticks, typically crafted from natural materials like rattan and bamboo, sitting in a bottle of fragranced oil. These reeds soak up and diffuse the fragrance, throwing it around the room. Simply enough, the more reeds you use, the stronger the aroma.
The market is flooded with incredible-smelling diffusers, but finding a scent that you love, that also suits your decor style, is the tricky part. Here, we've tested a huge range of reed diffusers, from the likes of The White Company, Rituals, ESPA and more. There's something for every taste, whether you prefer fresh fragrances or cosy autumnal scents.
Reed diffusers vs scented candles
Reed diffusers continuously fill your home with their aroma, while candles generally only work while lit, unless they have a particularly strong scent. Diffusers tend to have more longevity than candles — some of the larger options can last up to 10 months — and they’re typically a safer option as they pose no fire risk.
Fragrance oils can stain surfaces and cause skin irritation, so be careful not to spill any, and wash your hands after handling your diffuser.
How often should I flip the diffuser's reeds?
It’s best to flip the reeds every week or two to allow the smell to permeate the room. Dust and oil buildup can stop your diffuser from working effectively, so it's advised to replace the reeds completely every six months.

We’re yet to find a Rituals scent we don’t like, and this Ritual of Sakura Diffuser is no exception. A soothing and sweet combination of rice milk and cherry blossom, it's the perfect addition to a hallway or living room – we're currently enjoying ours in our hallway. It's the ideal balance of milky yet floral, and its sweet smell comes from notes of rice milk and cherry blossoms.
Sitting in a classy white ceramic jar that’s ribbed for design purposes, you can choose from two sizes – 70ml and 250ml. The smallest is perfect for tiny rooms, and the largest will make its mark on even the largest of spaces. It includes extra-long wooden sticks.
The White Company’s home fragrances have forever been a staple for us, and the Tuberose & Cashmere diffuser is one of our favourites for the end of summer. Its fragrant notes are floral yet warm and balanced by sweet jasmine for a rich and sophisticated scent. Plus, it’s complex but not overpowering. Better yet? It'll even give a gentle aroma to a large room.
The scent lives inside a classic The White Company vessel – an elegant glass design paired with rattan reeds. As always, this diffuser is crafted using high-quality oils, but unfortunately, there isn't a refill available. You can, however, buy a matching candle and home spray.
For those looking for a nostalgic seaside scent, this NEST diffuser is the one for you. Warming amber and patchouli are blended with lighter rose and jasmine to make a playful, sensuous fragrance in Urban Apothecary's Oudh Geranium diffuser. It has one of the best scent throws out of all the diffusers we tried, and it filled a large living room without being too intense. They say it smells like walking into a luxury hotel, and we totally agree.
If you're not already sold, then check out its vessel – an elegant black apothecary-style bottle, paired with matching black wooden reeds. You can buy refills for this fragrance, meaning you need only splurge once, as the refill is more affordable.
London perfumer Miller Harris’ light floral aroma is fresh and summery, and the elegant rose-hued bottle is one of the prettiest on our list. However, the scent throw isn't the strongest, even after flipping the reeds, so it’s best for smaller rooms. It offers notes of pink and white rose, perfectly balanced with mandarin and blackcurrants for a zesty twist. It's the ultimate spring and summer fragrance.
If the pink vessel is what attracted you to this diffuser, then we've got good news: all Miller Harris diffusers come in colourful vessel that's made of recyclable glass. All paired with black diffuser sticks. Unfortunately, refills are not available.
Aromatherapy brand ESPA’s Energising Diffuser is designed to refresh and revitalise, with help from notes of rosemary, eucalyptus and a sharp blast of peppermint. It’s a great one for workspaces — we tested it in a home office to help energise us throughout the day. And it would work great in a bathroom, too.Just like their candles, this ESPA diffuser is hand-poured. It sits in a minimalist design white vessel with rattan reeds. You can't refill this diffuser, but there is a matching soy candle available.
After The Rain is the signature scent of Scottish lifestyle brand Arran, remaining one of its bestsellers since it was first released in 1989. Designed to resemble the scent of a summer garden after a rainstorm, it's a light floral blend of rose, lime and sandalwood. The aroma managed to effectively fill our living room, without being too intense.
Sitting inside a simple yet sophisticated-looking clear glass bottle with neutral coloured reed sticks, it'll match any decor style. There's a matching room spray and candle that you can buy, but the vessel isn't refillable so once it's empty, you'll need to buy an entirely new one.
Commonly used in Soho House properties, so you just know it evokes luxury, the Cowshed Replenish diffuser is the perfect fresh fragrance. An excellent introduction to the British brand, with zingy citrus notes that evoke memories of fruity cocktails on summer days. While refreshing, it was a little overpowering, making it a better choice for large spaces.
Sitting in a simple glass vessel with a black collar and black reeds, it allows the fragrance to become the focal point. Better yet? It's refillable once empty, too. As well as avoiding artificial preservatives, Cowshed uses only wildcrafted essential oils and organic botanicals in the process of creating their diffuser blends.

Maison Margiela’s luxury home scent range is a creative take on life’s most pleasurable moments. Their Matcha Meditation diffuser offers a sweet yet floral fragrance combination. Think bergamot, orange flower, matcha and benzoin. In other words: it's a little earthy and well-balanced with sweet and floral notes, perfect for spring and summer.
The sleek white bottle is also noteworthy, making a chic addition to any home. Made from glass with a simple white cotton label, it's designed to replicate the tags used for the Replica fashion collection. It includes fancy white wooden reeds, and although it isn't refillable, it is also available as a candle.
Bon Parfumeur’s aromatic perfume and candle range has left us wanting more ever since we discovered it last year so, naturally, we were intrigued by their diffuser collection. Scent 03 is a spicy yet warm blend with leathery notes at its heart, well balanced with woody notes of patchouli and cedar. Don't forget about the hint of spiced amber and the subtle scent of vanilla that makes it the perfect pick for autumn and winter.
Housed inside a classic glass vessel with a white label, there's nothing too fancy about the design of this diffuser. It comes with black wooden reeds and is made in France. Annoyingly, there's no refill available once it's empty.
We can always rely on Neom for its complex essential oil blends, designed to soothe, relax and make your space smell great. Not only is this diffuser organic, but the Scent to De-Stress reed diffuser is a calming mix of lavender and jasmine, making it a great pick for bedrooms. We found it subtle enough for small spaces, and it lasted just under three months.
Boasting a recently upgraded design, the Neom vessel is now made of tinted orange-coloured glass, with the logo etched into it. It comes paired with black wooden reeds. Also, refills are available!
Brazilian beauty brand Granado has been on our radar for some time for its perfumes and home fragrances rooted in Brazilian tradition and culture. So, when we came across the Aurora reed diffuser, we just had to try it. Boasting a fresh, floral aroma that's surprisingly fitting for the warmer months, its aroma definitely offers something different. With sweet violet and lily-of-the-valley notes, it's great for floral lovers.
As well as an impressive scent throw and staying power, its stylish holder is inspired by vintage apothecary designs and effortlessly doubles as a decoration to perk up bare shelves. Unfortunately, it isn't refillable.
Bamford's Geranium diffuser brings the essence of a flower garden into your home. It offers a harmonious blend of soft sweetness and invigorating freshness, combining gentle notes of geranium and lavender, with a subtle hint of peppermint and eucalyptus. Crafted from a blend of pure essential oils, mixed with a natural alcohol base, it's made entirely in the UK. While the scent throw is subtle, it's the perfect choice for those who tend to avoid overpowering aromas.
Not just stylish, but its green glass holder is recyclable, and the reeds are sustainably sourced. You can buy a matching candle to complement, but refills aren't available – they do offer refills for other fragrances, however.
