Looking for a renovation project? A historic castle, set in the deep folds of Aberdeen, Scotland, is on the market for just £130,000 — but it needs some work done to it.
Knockhall Castle is situated near the mouth of the river Ythan and was built around 1565 as a towerhouse. Packed with illustrious history, it's the perfect property for those wanting to buy a house off-the-beaten-track.
To the south of the castle, there was once an enclosed courtyard, but all that remains today is a fragmentary round tower. You'll need an eye for renovation if you want to put down an offer, as the house will need a complete overhaul.
The castle is lit by large rectangular windows in the south and east walls, which date back to the mid-17th century. Some of the windows, which are from the 16th century, appear to still have gun loops in their sills (it's thought soldiers would use these during the war).
Other notable features include the fireplace in the kitchen, large cellar, roomy corridor and stellar views all around.
The land it's built on was once owned by the Sinclair family during the 13th century. It was the castle that they built for their son, Henry, the future 6th Lord Sinclair. But sadly, in around 1734, a fire guzzled the building, forcing the family to move out.
While this property (or its remains) might not be for everyone, it is sure to look spectacular once completed.
The area itself has plenty of activities for new homeowners to enjoy, including coastal walks, salmon fishing, a golf course and wildlife watching (there are large colonies of seals close by).
Those with young children will also be pleased to know that there are a handful of good schools in the area, too.
