The most popular day to move home this year is almost upon us – Friday 30th August will see four times more households than average move house. Despite this not being a bank holiday weekend, 20,000 moves will take place, which means that services such as removal companies will be busier than usual.
An analysis of over 650,000 removal quotes by HomeOwners Alliance and reallymoving, found that for the past 12 years, August has been the most popular month to move house. So while the month isn't a surprise, Paula Higgins, chief executive of the HomeOwners Alliance, is shocked by the specific date: 'We've been tracking this trend for over 12 years and were a little surprised to find that homeowners are still favouring the end of August weekend to move, despite it not being a Bank Holiday this year.'
Other findings from the study reveal a lot too. The least popular months to move home are January and February, and more than a quarter of households choose to move on a Friday, with the least popular day of the week being Sunday. One in five removal companies are willing to negotiate on price depending on the day of the week, so moving mid week could be a money-saving decision!
But what should you do if 30th August is your move-in date?! 'Moving on the busiest day of the year will mean more competition for services, so ensure you’re well prepared and everyone in the chain knows you’re working towards that date,' says Rob Houghton, CEO of reallymoving. 'People often leave removals to last, but it’s advisable to book well in advance and ask them to come to your house to assess the volume of your belongings, to ensure you have the right sized van and moving team.
'You won’t be able to confirm the booking until you’ve exchanged contracts, but keeping in regular contact with them will give you the best chance of securing your first choice removals team.'
