Black might be the boldest paint choice you can make – and not just because it’s notoriously tricky to apply. Used too heavily, it can easily overwhelm a room, making it feel darker and smaller. But this London home proves exactly why designers continue to embrace the dramatic shade. Elegant, cocooning and undeniably cosy, its dark interiors show how black can create a space that feels both sophisticated and inviting.
At House Beautiful, we’ll always champion colour, but this north-west London property proves that a pared-back palette can be just as impactful.
Inside the four-bedroom home, striking black focal points are softened with layers of white and warm neutral tones, creating a look that feels refined rather than stark. A landscaped garden and statement bathroom with oversized chequerboard tiles add even more design appeal, making this one of the most stylish monochrome homes we’ve seen.
'Wrottesley Road is a house shaped by contrast, the clean geometry and proportions of its interwar architecture reworked through a softer, contemporary lens,' Mathew Walters, Story of Home co-founder tells House Beautiful.
In 2023, the ground floor was completely stripped back and rebuilt. Now, it comprises a light-filled reception room at the front and a sprawling open-plan kitchen and dining area at the rear, separated by a set of double doors. In both spaces, black and white are juxtaposed in large proportions – an important characteristic for monochrome interiors that feel refined.
The living room is defined by large black floor-to-ceiling shelving and windows, softened by a whitewashed brick fireplace, pale flooring and neutral walls. The kitchen, meanwhile, leans more dramatic, with striking black cabinetry and joinery designed by Raebrooke Design.
Its polished concrete worktops resemble marble but still retain an industrial edge. This is tempered by the natural wood of the angled section of ceiling above, which has been fitted with skylights. A whitewashed brick wall and black-framed windows elegantly mirror the design details seen in the front room.
The four bedrooms are arranged across the first and second floors, all with newly installed air-conditioning – a home feature set to become increasingly important – while the bathrooms are finished with luxury fixtures. The family bathroom, for example, features a custom white-and-green marble shower, with oversized slabs arranged in a modern chequerboard pattern.
Outdoor spaces include a generous timber-decked terrace extending directly from one of the first-floor bedrooms, as well as a landscaped garden downstairs. Here, a level lawn forms the central focus, while planting beds provide greenery and the opportunity to put a personal stamp on the space.
This bold property is on the market with Story of Home for a guide price of £2.6 million.
