Take one look at television personality and fashion designer Whitney Port, and you wouldn't believe any space in her Los Angeles home would be in need of a refresh. But Whitney, who starred in MTV reality shows The Hills and its spin-off The City, begged to differ, acknowledging that both her bedroom and living room lacked the level of charm she desired in a home.
With the help of the globally-inspired home decor brand The Citizenry, and interior designer Natalie Myers of Veneer Designs, Whitney set out to craft the dream rooms that she always wanted.

Enter Whitney's living room and you'll instantly be consumed by a relaxing, family-friendly vibe, thanks to its comfortable mix of natural materials. Designer Natalie Myers achieved this look by weaving in rattan stools, woven baskets, leather chairs, and a shaggy wool rug. 'The soft surfaces and natural materials are perfect for toddlers — and soothing for parents,' explains Natalie.
Whitney's favourite furniture in the room? 'My favourite pieces are the couple of tan leather chairs,' she says. "the Citizenry team gave our living room the cosiness and style it was missing. They added more of the midcentury aesthetic I was looking for.'
Layering is a tried-and-true trick that designers rely on for a sophisticated room, and Natalie's approach is no different. Whitney's living room proves to be a lesson in the art of layering, which, Natalie says, 'adds a collected elegance to the space'.
Framed prints of varying sizes on the mantel, an assortment of pillows on the sofa, and objets d'art with colour-blocked books on the coffee table are just a few examples of layering in the design scheme.
Remember: decorating doesn't always require spending more money. Sometimes, breathing new life into a space just calls for moving things around. 'Pull art, lamps, and accessories from rarely used spaces into the main areas of your home,' Natalie advises.
