A sherpa blanket or throw is made from sherpa fabric; a 100 per cent synthetic material designed to look and feel like wool from a sheep. The modern day sherpa fleece is much easier to care for than traditional wool and is typically made from cotton wool or polyester, or a polyester/acrylic blend. It has reversible sides: the underside is soft, fleecy and textured, designed to imitate sheep’s wool, while the top tends to be smoother, often with a suede-like feel.
It’s a great material for trapping in heat, which is why so many blankets and throws are of the sherpa variety these days. This heat trapping quality also makes it ideal for snuggling up with on a cold winter's day or night.
