Vintage IKEA designs are back in lively new colours.
IKEA is delving into its archives and revisiting iconic designs in celebration of its 80th anniversary this year. In a brand new and exclusive collection, Nytillverkad reimagines iconic IKEA designs from the last eight decades with a playful, contemporary twist.
With the popularity of vintage furniture continuing to grow, IKEA is looking to its past to reinvent some classics, from the stackable, space-saving DOMSTEN stool, to the bold KRYPKORNELL pattern and the LAGERMISPEL stripe design.
Some products have been given a simple update with vivid new colourways, while others have been further engineered to meet the stricter stability, quality, and flat-packing requirements of today.
The first launch of 16 products, revealed at Milan Design Week, will be available across IKEA stores from July 2023. The entire collection consists of five capsules, with more launches planned over the next few years.
'Nytillverkad is a fun, playful and loud collection, that stays true to the original IKEA designs – resulting in a range of products that are sure to evoke timeless Scandi style in the home, whilst maintaining their functionality,' says the Swedish furniture retailer.

The BONDSKÄRET coat stand is a new bold take on the SMED coat stand, originally developed by designer Rutger Andersson in 1978.
'It was the first thing I drew as a designer at IKEA. Most coat hangers back then were just these big ones in wood, and I wanted to make one that you could flat pack and assemble,' Rutger recalls. 'I must've gotten the inspiration from a cactus. It looks like a cactus.'
For the revamped design, the hooks are now made entirely of metal, instead of its previous plastic tips, and the legs of the coat hanger now lock upon assembly.
One of our favourites so far is the LÖVBACKEN side table. From pastel green to cobalt blue, we love the organic curves, tapered legs and brass finish.
'All the products have a story behind them, like one of our most iconic products LÖVET, first introduced in 1956. In the Nytillverkad version, we call it LÖVBACKEN, and it comes in orange, blue, and light green with an ash veneer top, adding a bold pop of colour to any room,' explains Karin Gustavsson, Creative Leader of the Nytillverkad collection, IKEA of Sweden.
Another iconic design is the KRYPKORNELL pattern. It was first introduced in 1980 as the BLADHULT pattern (designed by renowned Swedish textile designer Sven Fristedt) on a cover for the KLIPPAN sofa.
Now, the cheerful multicoloured leaf print, typical for Scandinavian design, is available on bedding, kitchen accessories, pre-cut fabric, and cushion covers. This playful print will no doubt add a sunny boost of colour and charisma to any home.
The broad-striped Nytillverkad LAGERMISPEL cushion cover in white and yellow is an update of Sven Fristedt's ILEX pattern, originally launched in the 1983 IKEA catalogue.

'The simplicity in the design – how they look – and how they help you in your everyday life is what makes this collection so special,' says Johan Ejdemo, Design Manager at IKEA of Sweden.
The Nytillverkad collection also includes the DOMSTEN stool, featuring a smooth pine top and metal legs in contemporary colours. This range takes its inspiration from the JERRY stool designed by Karin Mobring.
The collection spans furniture, bedding and accessories, all 'updated to match the bold outlook of the next generation', including this midnight blue oval rug.
Create a small indoor jungle, from the living room to the home office, with this colourful plant stand. You can also use it as a side table or coffee table if you wish.
With so many IKEA products over the years, how did the designers choose which one to reinvent to mark its 80th birthday? The process involved looking through old catalogues as well as consulting with IKEA archivists, long-time co-workers, and designers past and present.
