We can't get enough of the glossy glaze and simple shapes.

Danish design brand Hay has just launched its new tableware collection – and we couldn't love it more. The Barro range celebrates the simplicity and warmth of terracotta tableware, featuring high-gloss glazes, understated silhouettes and joyful, inviting colourways.
So, why is it called Barro? Meaning 'clay' in Portuguese, the name is a way for designer Rui Pereirato to highlight the traditional craftsmanship of his home country, especially terracotta goods.
He explains: 'Being Portuguese, this material is part of my memory and daily life for as far as I can remember. These warm and simple objects can be found in street markets, restaurants, and homes across Portugal, a material for everybody, passed on from generation to generation.'
The Barro collection spans everything from side plates and bowls to butter dishes and candleholders – anything a well-set dining table could need, really. Combining form and function, each piece is crafted in Portugal from durable terracotta, with minimum water absorption and good impact resistance – essential for mealtimes in busy households.
Even the smallest details have been considered. 'The rolled edge detail which frames plates, bowls and trays is the guiding thread of this collection,' explains Rui. 'Its soft touch and proportions relate to the human fingertips, aiming to offer a pleasant articulation with the user’s hand.'
It's the ideal tableware collection for people who love to mix and match. The colours used to glaze each piece were specifically selected to be combined indefinitely, including green, dark blue, light blue, off-white, pink, and natural terracotta. However, not all items are available in all colours, 'making space for one’s own sensibility', says Rui. He adds that the aim is for people to create their own 'customised tablescapes'.
And, when it comes to quality, Hay hasn't cut corners. Not only are all Barro pieces dishwasher and microwave-safe, but they're also ovenproof and freezer-safe. It doesn't get much more durable than that!
