Everyone needs a laundry basket (or two) in their home. Without one, clothes end up scattered around the house – and let's face it, laundry is hard enough already. The best baskets don’t just hold washing; they also add style and, in some cases, extra storage. Our handpicked designs prove that practical can be beautiful, blending function with style so your basket enhances your bedroom or bathroom instead of spoiling it.
A well-designed laundry basket will be with you every step of the way — from when you first toss your dirty socks into it, to dragging it down the stairs and into your machine, and in some cases even after it's dry and ready to be folded and put away. 'If your laundry tools – such as baskets, bins, drying racks, accessories and rotary — are well-designed, it can make washing day a more pleasurable ritual,' says Twan Verdonck, creative director for homeware brand Brabantia.
Not sure which design is best for you? We've rounded up a range of options for everywhere from your guest room to your bedroom and even water-resistant designs for your bathroom.
Think collapsible laundry baskets that can be tucked away after use, ones with dual compartments for separating your whites from your colours and wheeled designs for easy transportation. Plus, there's even a laundry basket that doubles as extra shelf storage — to hold those all-important toiletries within easy reach. Because owning the perfect laundry basket will make you dread doing this job a little bit less.
How to choose the best laundry basket
Size is important, so check the dimensions before you buy. Small space dwellers may appreciate corner baskets or foldable options, while busy households often prefer larger hampers with multiple compartments for easy organisation.
If you often move your basket to the machine, a design with carry handles or wheels will be easier to transport. Not all hampers have lids and covers, so consider whether you’d rather keep dirty washing hidden.
It’s also important that the basket suits your interior style. Many bins in our edit come in muted colours or natural weaves to blend into any room, but we’ve also included some colourful designs if you prefer making a statement.
How many laundry baskets do I need?
It depends on the size of your home and how much laundry your household goes through. One large hamper should be sufficient for two people, while a big family may prefer several baskets or one each in their bedrooms.
'If laundry bins are at hand, it reduces laundry thrown on the floor or piling up on chairs,' says Twan. 'Make it convenient for everyone to reduce the work.'
How to stop a laundry basket from smelling
Laundry baskets can smell musty if not looked after properly, but this is easily avoidable.
Don't put damp materials inside, as they can become smelly quickly.
If your basket has a fabric lining, pop it in the washing machine every few weeks to keep it fresh.
Place a fragrance sachet (like this one from Amazon) in the bottom of your hamper to help absorb bad smells.
Twan also advises keeping on top of your laundry pile frequently to avoid unpleasant odours — although be mindful and don’t wash clothes unless they’re actually dirty. 'Less washing is better for the environment and your clothes,' he says.

Joseph Joseph never lets us down with its space-saving, smart products, and this basket proves our point. Inside, it has two roomy compartments — one for sheets and towels and the other for clothes, or for separating lights and darks. Sturdy handles will also help you cart your washing from room to room. It's designed with a lid to hide everything inside, and you can customise it to your liking. Choose from one large compartment, two smaller ones or three tiny ones to separate your washing in style.
Not the best for smaller homes as it's quite large
This four-wheeled basket with a carry handle should lessen the pain of lugging hefty loads to the machine. With three compartments and a side pocket, you’ll never have to worry about mixing up lights and darks again. It also folds flat, meaning you can store it away when it’s empty. Choose from two colourways: natural and grey. And if you're not a fan of the wheels, it also comes with static feet. It's a great pick for larger families with lots of washing.
With a capacity of 75 litres, this collapsible laundry basket is slim enough to fit in narrow areas such as small nooks in bedrooms and bathrooms. The neutral colourway is perfect for muted schemes, and it's made from Oxford fabric with a bamboo handle. It's a great affordable pick at less than £20, and it even has a lid.
Designed to fit into that annoying gap you're forever trying to fill, this narrow laundry basket is great for smaller rooms or if floor space is precious in your home. It's lidded and boasts a gorgeous woven design, plus there are lots of matching pieces that you can buy, also from Matalan. Think open storage baskets, a planter and even a full-size laundry basket.
Made from natural cotton rope, this laundry hamper would complement rooms with Scandi or minimalist schemes. The large 58-litre capacity holds plenty of clothes, making it a good pick for busy households. It's Amazon's Choice for a reason, as it's affordable, sturdy (thanks to its rope construction), and it has handles, too. Just to note: it isn't lidded! We'd recommend it for students, a nursery or a guest room, as it isn't huge.
This basket blends style with function. With space for up to four large loads of laundry and a removable cotton lining, it's perfect for busy family life. With a lid to hide everything away, it's a shame it doesn't have handles for carrying. Saying that, its liner is washable, which is handy, while it's easy to remove and carry to your washing machine. Perfect for a bedroom, this laundry basket will blend into any bedroom seamlessly.
If you've got an empty corner, then why not use it to house your laundry basket? There's no need to waste any other floor space with this corner design, which is also foldable when not in use. It's also lidded, and for £20, you can't really go wrong!
We love the open frame and intricately woven structure of this boho-inspired basket. It’s big enough for several heavy loads and even comes with a handy lid for keeping laundry neatly hidden away. It's mostly for design purposes, we'll be the first to admit that, as it doesn't have handles for carrying. It is lidded, though, to hide your dirties away.
Blending function and form, this double-basket laundry hamper looks the part in our boho-inspired bathroom. Made from bamboo with a material bag, it comes with built-in handles to make separating (and removing) your laundry a breeze. It also features a shelf to maximise your bathroom storage space, to house your toiletries and more. Each compartment pulls out to reveal your laundry, meaning it's slightly hidden away, and the bags are washable for convenience. These bags also come in black and white, grey, or natural.
For style and substance, we can't get enough of this charming scalloped laundry basket from Dunelm. Available in pastel green, as well as baby blue and natural, it will add a touch of whimsy to any bathroom or bedroom. We love its lidded design to hide dirty clothes, and the fact that it's nice and sizeable.
With a subtle pop of colour, this laundry basket will make a cheery addition to any room. A quirky geometric design brings an element of interest and complements the delightful green hue well. Its deep basket will hold a generous amount of washing, and this black version is available if you need a spare basket for another room. It does come with a gorgeous (and easy to open) lid, plus it has handles, but be warned that it isn't washable. It's also recommended not to use it in your bathroom (or anywhere else that's super humid in your home!).
Brabantia’s laundry bin is pricey, but we can vouch that it’s a worthwhile investment. Along with two spacious compartments, we like its other handy features: a hands-free lid, a removable cotton lining with Velcro fastenings and ventilation holes to help moisture escape and prevent bad smells. Plus, its impressive 5-year guarantee sweetens the deal. Its steel design also makes it great for bathrooms, as it can withstand the humidity.
Perfect for smaller spaces, this nifty foldable option from Eden & Willow comfortably holds a load or two of dirty washing and comes in this pleasant grey hue or a cream colourway. It's simple yet durable, and although it doesn't have a lid, it will fit nicely in a corner of a small room.
