Amanda Holden has revealed what Alan Carr is really like behind the scenes of their hit BBC renovation show — and it turns out viewers are seeing a pretty accurate version of events.

Asked whether Alan is genuinely as bad at DIY as he seems on screen, Amanda didn’t hesitate: 'He is absolutely useless' but 'good with a glue gun'.

The TV star, who has recently launched a new DFS sofa collection, said Alan is 'getting better' and praised him for mucking in with the harder jobs — but admitted he is also partial to 'so many tea breaks' and the occasional nap.

‘He worked quite hard this year. When we were having to shovel with cement and gravel and things like that, he actually put his back into it.’

Still, hard work doesn’t always come without interruption.

‘He has so many tea breaks,’ Amanda adds. ‘I carry on working and he's just gone and he gets on his phone or has a nap.’

It’s not just on set where mishaps follow Alan, either.

‘It's so funny the amount of things that happen to him. He'll ring me twice a week with something that's happened. I always say the title of his next book should be, It only Ever Happens to You, Alan...’ she tells us.

Fans of the show will already be familiar with some of those moments – including the now-infamous waterslide scene that left Alan tipped upside down mid-ride.

‘You know, if you've seen him in the water park, that turned into a distaster,’ Amanda says. ‘Disasters follow him around, but it's brilliant.’

According to reports, series five will reportedly air next year, with Alan and Amanda heading to a surprising new direction – Scandinavia.

‘Hopefully it's going to be in an area that people would never have thought we would do,’ she tells us. ‘We'll still be going abroad, but there won't be any olive oil is all I'm going to say.’

Amanda tells us that outside of the show, she loves decorating her own house.

‘I love a project. My ideal would be to build a house from scratch, but my husband doesn't have a stomach for that,’ she says.

Does being on Amanda & Alan scratch that itch for her? ‘Yeah, exactly. I think that's why he loves me doing that show because it gets me out of the house and stops me moving.’

In that case, perhaps it’s time to bring on season five.
