A great trash can is one of those home purchases you take for granted growing up. But it turns out that where you store your waste is a pretty big deal, and a good one often costs a pretty penny. Budget ones are always available, but given that it’s a home for unpleasant odors and pests, it’s worth it to splurge on a “pretty one” so you don’t have a cold, metal eyesore in your kitchen. Digital Designer Soumi Sarkar prides herself on her cute apartment, and she finally found a trash can set that doesn’t take that away.

Caraway is known for its show-stopping ceramic cookware and bakeware that adds color to any kitchen. But now they’ve brought that vibrant look to your trash can, so you don’t have to settle for a bland design. Their trash and recycling bins are modular, so they’re easy to stack and rearrange. And they come in different sizes (rectangular and slim), so if you need to make the most of a small space, it’s an ideal purchase. The bins come in five chic colors, and Sarkar opted for the Clay color to blend in with the warm cabinetry of her kitchen.

“I've been using the Caraway trash and recycling system for a few months now and absolutely love it,” Sarkar says. “With the trash can, I really like its double bin system—the inner bin makes it really easy to change bags. The lid has a soft close, which also helps a lot, especially when the kitchen gets busy.”

Yes, ~$400 is a lot to drop on trash cans, but any high-traffic household knows how important these are. If you have kids, pets, you’re a neat freak, or you’re a frequent home cook, then you’re making frequent trips to the trash can. Having it be a less noisy, less smelly contraption goes a long way towards peace at home. And it’s not just about the waste. Sustainability is made much simpler with the organization of the recycling system.

“I was looking for a long time for a way to organize the recycling in my New York City apartment, where space is a premium,” Sarkar says. “I needed something that was efficient and also not an eyesore. This recycling system really solves those problems for me! The double container makes it easy for me to sort paper and cardboard from metal and glass. The drawers make it really easy to pull out and fill the containers. The top, which I use for metal/glass, also has two flaps on the top, which allow you to fill it from there.”

And just because the bins are slim doesn’t mean you’ll have to buy specialty trash bags or empty them every day. “At 13 gallons for the trash can and seven gallons for each of the recycling sections, they really do hold a lot of trash,” Sarkar says. “The recycling drawers are also quite deep — I've been able to stack multiple rows of cans, bottles, etc. in the metal/glass compartment, as well as small shipping boxes broken down where I keep the paper/cardboard.”
