As a shopping editor, I have tested my fair share of sheets and mattresses, so I know which brands I personally like and would recommend to friends. The one popular brand I had yet to test, though, was Saatva. I've been to the store and have "slept" on the mattresses there briefly to see what the fuss was about, but because I had no need to buy a Saatva, I'd always leave empty-handed.
All that changed, though, last year when the bed in my in-laws' guest room kept hurting my back. I finally decided enough was enough and needed a new mattress for this room. House Beautiful just so happened to need a tester for the Saatva Latex Hybrid, so I volunteered as tribute. Since I have a latex mattress at home, I was familiar with the materials and feel of the Saatva model and knew I would probably like the bed, even having never seen or slept on it. The gamble was worth it: it's so much better than the old bed at my in-laws' place.
Delivery & Install Process
Since Saatva is a premium luxury mattress brand, it offers free white-glove delivery and can remove your old mattress at no charge. (Just check the "free mattress removal" box at checkout.)
I actually had to change my delivery address after I submitted my order, and it was easy to contact a representative to do so. I communicated via email with a "Saatva Sleep Guide," and they helped ensure the mattress was delivered to the correct spot. Prior to delivery, they emailed and called me to schedule a date and time. Communication was always 10/10. Once the delivery people arrived, they brought in the new mattress and took the old one away—I didn't have to lift a finger.
What Makes the Saatva Latex Hybrid Mattress Different From the Other Models?
I feel like Saatva's latex hybrid mattress isn't as well-known as its highly reviewed and beloved Classic or the back-pain-relieving Rx model. It caters to a niche crowd of buyers seeking eco-friendly materials such as organic natural latex, organic cotton, and wool. Since I own a latex mattress from another brand, I felt confident that I would like the Saatva one after reading more about the materials and feel.
What makes the latex hybrid mattress special is the materials used. It's crafted from the highest-standard of GOLS-certified organic latex, organic wool (no fiberglass flame barrier), organic cotton, and recycled-steel coils. Other Saatva models may use some natural materials too, but they aren't all latex, wool, and cotton in the same way this model is positioned. If buying an organic mattress is important to you, you'll like this Saatva pick.
In terms of feel, the latex hybrid has a medium-firm feel, rated 6/10 on the website. The firmness is fixed, so you can't adjust it, and it is the perfect middle ground for couples who can't agree on firmness levels. Here's a breakdown of how this mattress feels compared to the other models on site:
- Classic: You can choose amongst three firmness levels: plush soft (3/10), luxury firm (5-7/10), firm (8/10)
- Rx: Supportive Plush, rating of 3-4/10
- Memory Foam Hybrid: Medium firm rating of 5-7/10
- HD: Medium firm rating of 5-7/10
- Contour5: You can choose between medium (5-7/10) or firm (8/10)
- Zenhaven: The mattress is flippable, so one side is luxury plush (medium, 4-5/10) and the other is gentle firm (7-8/10)
- Solaire: Has 50 firmness settings for personalized comfort
I like a mattress on the firmer, supportive side (latex contours but also has a buoyant, responsive feel), so I felt good about the 6/10 rating for the latex model. It also has an exclusive guardin botanical antimicrobial treatment that inhibits the growth of bacteria, mold, and mildew—a plus for germaphobes like myself.
Saatva Latex Hybrid Mattress Performance Review
My main gripe about the guest bed at my in-laws' was that it felt like sleeping on a wooden plank. When my husband and I visit them, we usually stay for a week—I can't do any longer because of the horrible mattress—and I not only toss and turn but also wake up every other morning with an achy back because of it. My husband's back also aches, but he considers this a trade-off so he can spend time with his parents, whom he doesn't see often. I am a little more complain-y, so as soon as I could swap their bed out with this Saatva latex mattress, I did.
Firmness
The firmness level (6/10) of the latex hybrid was amazing. It was firm enough for me, but not too firm that it brought back bad memories of sleeping on the old mattress. My husband and I are both back sleepers, and the description for this bed says the latex mattress is well-suited for back and stomach sleepers—a win for us! What I've noticed about latex mattresses is that they don't cradle or hug your body; rather, they "lift" you so you don't sink, while still providing a soft spot for you to sleep.
Motion Isolation
I did get up to use the bathroom every once in awhile and my husband did not stir. Similarly, when I slept in on the weekends, and he got up, I did not notice! We are not tossers and turners, usually, so the bed works for us, but if you're a light sleeper, you may be more sensitive to the motion-isolation transfer of this mattress.
Temperature Regulation
My in-laws keep their house on the warmer side, but luckily, natural latex is breathable, and the organic New Zealand wool in this mattress also helps to regulate body temperature. We felt neither hot nor cold while sleeping on the mattress with 100 percent cotton sheets, but on one night, I felt warmer.
My mother-in-law confirms that the mattress can make you feel warm (after hearing us rave about it, she slept on the bed when we went back to New York City after the holidays, and said this was her favorite mattress she's ever slept on). Sometimes her joints feel stiff, or her hip will hurt due to the weather and age, but this bed lessens those painful moments. Ever since I've known my in-laws, they have slept in separate beds—they like their own space—and now she's taken it one step further by sleeping on the Saatva in the guest room rather than in their primary bedroom!
How It Compares to My Naturepedic Latex Mattress
I have a Naturepedic EOS Classic Organic Mattress in my own guest room, which I previously tested for work, so I was able to compare and contrast this latex mattress with the Saatva one. Both mattresses emphasize organic textiles like wool and organic latex, paired with a coil support core. They are both well-made and feel high-quality. They both "lift" me up and make me feel neither too hot nor too cold.
The biggest differences are price and firmness levels. The Naturepedic costs $3,799 for a queen, while the Saatva latex hybrid costs $2,299. The Naturepedic offers a left and right side layer that you can customize with your firmness level (you can choose from five options), providing a more tailored sleep experience for couples. Over time, you can swap out and even replace these layers without getting rid of your entire mattress, which is awesome.
Initially, I was super impressed with the Naturepedic, but after also trying the Saatva latex model, if I had to buy one of these beds again, I'd actually go with the Saatva. It checks off the eco-friendly boxes and feels virtually the same as sleeping on a Naturepedic mattress, but at a lower cost.
Saatva Latex Hybrid Mattress Pricing and Sizing
The Saatva Latex Hybrid comes in seven different sizes, ranging from twin to Cal King. The Queen costs $2,599, though it's currently on sale for $2,299. It's a little more expensive than the Classic in Queen, which is $2,179, but cheaper than the Rx in Queen ($3,449). Given all the organic and eco-friendly materials in this mattress, the pricing seems fair to me and not over the top, especially since it is a Saatva.
Pros and Cons
Is the Saatva Latex Hybrid Mattress Worth Buying?
Yes, but only if you have these specific preferences; otherwise, consider other options: First, you're really conscientious about the materials, preferring organic cotton/wool and certified latex. Second, you don't care about feeling "hugged" by your mattress like with memory foam, since latex feels more buoyant, and you like that latex/cotton wool can regulate your temperature. If neither of these matters to you, the bed probably won’t make or break your sleep quality.
I personally really liked the Saatva latex bed because it was comfortable, supportive, and so much better than my in-laws' previous mattress. Since I have not slept on any of Saatva's other mattresses, I can't say if this one is better than the others for me, but I have no desire to try the other models at the moment because I enjoy the latex hybrid. Compared to my Naturepedic, I definitely like the Saatva more price-wise for the same high-end quality, but do I love the Saatva Latex Hybrid more than my everyday Nectar Classic mattress? No.
Ultimately, the latex hybrid is not a must-buy unless you are looking for an organic mattress with a firmer, lifted feel. This bed is geared toward health-conscious sleepers, so if you don't consider yourself this kind of type A shopper, check out the brand's other highly rated picks, like the Classic.
