When it comes to picking out furniture and decor for your bedroom, many people are more conscious about bringing in chemicals and toxins into their sleeping area. One of the most important shopping decisions here is whether or not you should get an organic mattress and/or organic bedding. We'll admit the term "organic" itself can feel convoluted to define, which is why we turned to Arin Schultz, VP of sales and marketing at Naturepedic, a brand specializing in eco-friendly mattresses, for guidance while we hunted for the best organic mattresses to buy.
Schultz says that because the word organic is not "defined or regulated by the U.S. government for mattresses, there are no laws that regulate the marketing, materials or construction of organic mattresses." Basically, brands have the freedom to offer up a myriad of reasons as to why their mattresses are organic, even if they're not. Instead of falling victim to greenwashing tactics, luckily there are several ways you can pick out the good organic mattresses from the bad ones. To help identify products with a lack of toxic, synthetic materials, Schultz suggests checking for certifications. One type is the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS), which is a worldwide standard for processing fibers like wool and cotton.
"Voluntary certification standards, like GOTS, are critical in determining what can and cannot be considered an organic mattress," Schultz adds. "Organic Content Standard (OCS) is another helpful certification—it’s a tracking certification that traces the chain of custody of an organic material (like cotton) from the farm to the finished product." Now, lets get to the fun part: the process of actually shopping for an organic mattresses. We started your research for you, tracking down options woven from certified organic fibers like wool and cotton. We also looked for mattresses that included extra certifications against harmful chemicals and dyes, such as the OEKO-TEX Standard 100. "We spend a third of our lives on our mattresses," Schultz says. "The easiest way to avoid unnecessary exposure to chemicals is by shopping organic."

Finding a mattress made of certified organic ingredients that's not too expensive doesn't have to be a pipe dream. "I wanted to get a mattress that was organic and not full of chemicals as a top priority," one reviewer wrote. "As many know, that's a costly decision. For parents who want to buy an organic mattress for their toddler or teens, check out Avocado, which is beloved by one of our editors. You could buy this mattress for its comfortable organic cotton shell or the support of its certified foam, but the biggest advantage is the way it relieves back pain. After suffering a running injury in 2022, Deputy Digital Editor Katelyn Lunders snagged this mattress for support to ease her back pain. She sings its praises to this day. Though many organic mattresses are constructed with organic latex, they're not a great option for those who don't enjoy the feel of foam or have a latex allergy. Don't think the lack of foam makes it stiff all-around, though. In our search for organic mattresses, we focused on options that lack synthetic materials. Most of our picks are woven from natural fibers like wool, latex, and cotton, or springs crafted from recycled steel. Mattresses from editor-favorite brands Saatva and Avocado are made from organic materials, so we made sure to include our tested picks like the Saatva Rx, the Saatva Classic and the Avocado Green. For the mattresses that didn't pass through our hands, we checked for certifications against toxins and ethically sourced materials. We also checked verified customer reviews to ensure that those who purchased it before had positive experiences, to vet these mattresses as closely as possible. Many mattresses even come with sleep trials, so you can evaluate them for yourself at home.
Material: Common materials for organic mattresses include wool, cotton, latex, and steel. "Organic mattresses incorporate organic fibers, approved latex and other approved, reasonably non-toxic materials," Schultz says. "This includes certified organic cotton fabrics, certified organic cotton fill, certified organic wool, steel coils and latex (made from rubber sap) approved by GOTS for organic mattresses. Other materials may be allowed in minor amounts and/or for accessory uses. In some cases, other materials may be allowed in major amounts as well. For example, steel coils are actually a majority (certainly by weight) of the whole organic mattress."
Know your preferences for hand-feel and responsiveness before you shop. Responsive latex foam would be great for those who like a plush mattress, but if you find wool more scratchy than cozy, a mattress with pure wool layers like the Parachute Eco might not be best for you.
Mattress Type and Firmness: This is something you should pay attention to whether you're shopping for an organic or non-organic mattress. Some common mattress types include foam ones, innerspring/coil mattresses, and hybrid constructions that include layers of both materials. Those who prefer a bouncy support might want a mattress with coils, but those who like to sink in and be cradled by their mattress should aim for foam or latex options.
Certifications: These metrics are what make a mattress organic in the first place. They indicate that governing body or rigorous set of parameters had to approve the mattress. "At Naturepedic, we say a product isn’t organic unless it is certified organic," Schultz says. "The number one way to protect yourself from greenwashing is to look for reputable, third-party certifications by organizations that are committed to sustainability." Watch for the following markers to ensure a safe mattress buy.
If you like to prioritize your sleep health, certified organic mattresses are absolutely worth the investment. The various certifications help you track exactly what materials are in your mattress, and in some cases, the farm the fibers originated at. Certifications against harmful flame retardants and formaldehyde add an extra layer of protection. This is extra important for those with sensitive skin or allergies, who need to be certain about the content of their bedding and mattress. Plus, not only is shopping organic a more sustainable practice, it helps with the longevity of your mattress. "Natural materials like organic cotton, wool, and natural latex are more durable than synthetic materials and can go a long way," Schultz says. Even still, Schultz recommends that you replace your mattress every seven to 10 years.
